Abstract

Congenital defects in humans are of greater concern, and in that line, cystic fibrosis (CF) has been one of the most complex diseases posing treatment challenge till date. Though it is a chronic condition, CF is closely associated with dysfunction of various organ systems of the human body, which in turn results in secondary infections by microbes. Decades of research by scientists worldwide has narrowed down the cause of CF to a single target gene. But the complexity of the disease is the prime impediment to finding a single-shot cure. Fortunately, the multidisciplinary approach toward understanding and management of the CF condition has certainly increased the level of life expectancy among CF patients. In particular, the ""omics"" and the ""systems biology"" approach have greatly widened the focal area for better understanding of the disease. This book includes a collection of interesting chapters contributed by eminent scientists around the world who have been striving to improve the life of those affected by CF.

Abstract

Systemic sclerosis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by immunological alterations, small vessel vasculopathy, and skin and other organ fibrosis. Despite progress in the knowledge of pathogenic steps and therapeutic options, when compared with other rheumatic conditions, it shows the lowest life expectancy rate. Early diagnosis is important as early treatment could lead to better outcomes. Great progress has been made in the treatment of specific symptoms; however, there are still no disease-modifying drugs that are able to control the overall disease activity satisfactorily. This book covers the latest knowledge in systemic sclerosis from pathophysiology to clinical presentation and management. Hopefully, this book will be a useful resource to students, residents, rheumatologists, dermatologist, and anyone interested in this fascinating disease.

Abstract

This book provides detailed information on the nosology, pathology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of fibro-inflammatory disorders, rare diseases that often display systemic organ involvement. Among the conditions considered are IgG4-related disease, sclerosing cholangitis, Hashimoto’s and Riedel’s thyroiditis, retroperitoneal fibrosis/chronic periaortitis, mediastinal fibrosis, Erdheim-Chester disease, gadolinium-induced fibrosis, and sclerosing mesenteritis. This group of entities is still poorly defined and is characterized by the common denominator of chronic inflammatory infiltrate admixed with abundant fibrosis. IgG4-related disease is the prototypical example. Systemic Fibroinflammatory Disorders is the first book to draw together information on these conditions. As these diseases often require an interdisciplinary approach, the book is addressed to specialists of different disciplines, especially internists, rheumatologists, nephrologists, clinical immunologists, and hematologists.

Abstract

Comprised of the authoritative work of international experts, this fully-updated second edition of Scleroderma builds upon the well-regarded approach in the first edition to provide integrated, concise, and up-to-date synthesis of current concepts of pathogenesis and modern approaches to management of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). With a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive care, this book is easily accessible for health care professionals in many fields. The new edition includes extensive updated material based on major developments in the field, with new chapters on personalized medicine, cancer complications, global perspectives on scleroderma, and more. It presents a succinct and thoughtful synthesis of current pathomechanistic concepts, providing a valuable reference tool for basic and translational investigators working in the field. Scleroderma: From Pathogenesis to Comprehensive Management serves as an essential, all-inclusive resource for rheumatologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, nephrologists and all those involved in the care of scleroderma patients.

Abstract

This book explores comorbidity in patients with rheumatic diseases and details both care and treatment options in standard clinical practice.Patients with rheumatic diseases are clinically complex, and the interplay of their disease activity with associated conditions may lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Recently there have been major advances in the management of rheumatic diseases, however, without addressing the potential comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disease; pulmonary disease; and depression; outcomes remain poor. With its 19 chapters, covering the management of major rheumatic diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus , and osteoarthritis), potential comorbidities and treatment recommendations, as well as possible interactions between conditions; this book addresses the gap between textbook medicine and day to day patients' care. Authors also discuss the new hot issue of the comorbidity index, comparing the standard tools to the recently developed indices and how they can assist the rheumatologists in determining disease burden, prognosis, and comorbidity probability. This book is an ideal clinical guide and reference that enables rheumatologists, internal medicine physicians, and residents to address the full clinical expression of these rheumatic diseases with views towards prevention or early management of comorbid conditions. .
