O livro analisa a implementação da Educação das Relações Étnico-raciais no Brasil, a partir da Lei 10639/2003, que estabelece a obrigatoriedade do ensino de história e cultura africana e afro-brasileira no currículo da educação básica. No livro é descrito o processo de implementação da lei no contexto da luta do movimento negro brasileiro. São apresentadas e sistematizadas avaliações sobre a implementação realizadas pelo Ministério da Educação, a Secretaria de Políticas de Promoção de Igualdade Racial da Presidência da República e por pesquisadores da temática. Foram analisados dois programas federais que visaram implementar a educação das relações étnico-raciais: o Programa Educação Africanidades Brasil (Africanidades) e Programa de Ações Afirmativas para a População Negra nas Instituições Federais e Estaduais de Educação Superior (Uniafro). A partir da análise desses modelos de execução de política pública, bem como das avaliações da implementação da educação das relações étnico-raciais é possível indicar caminhos para a implementação de uma política efetiva de formação de docentes para a implementação da Lei 10639/2003.

"D. João: personagem fundamental na história luso-brasileira, que em meio às máscaras do cargo e aos poucos vestígios que deixou, fez com que sua personagem fosse, regra geral, uma criação pessoal dos historiadores que forjaram e continuam forjando sua história. Muito já se escreveu sobre o soberano em si mesmo ou acerca de seu governo. No entanto, várias lacunas ainda existem na historiografia sobre seu papel e sua política. Dessa forma, o livro que Juliana Gesuelli Meirelles apresenta ao público contribui para preencher um novo espaço em nossa historiografia acerca de D. João, cuja figura ocupa um lugar especial no imaginário dos brasileiros, como salientou o antropólogo Roberto DaMatta. Jovem historiadora, que há alguns anos trabalha com temáticas que envolvem o período joanino no Brasil, Juliana traz agora um olhar inovador sobre os diversos sentidos da política cultural durante a governança de D. João no mundo luso-brasileiro entre os anos de 1792-1821. Demonstra grande sensibilidade ao analisar, a partir da ótica da ilustração luso-brasileira, as especificidades da política cultural joanina por meio de quatro pontos fundamentais desse conjunto tanto em Lisboa quanto no Rio de Janeiro: a imprensa interatlântica, os Reais teatros, as Reais Academias Militares e as Reais Bibliotecas Públicas da Corte. Dessa forma, traz à luz a ação do Estado monárquico voltada para tais espaços de saber, demonstrando essa política como uma prática governativa da Coroa em sua ação em relação ao todo da sociedade daquela época, com exceção de uma grande parcela da população, ou seja, a dos escravos. No entanto, tal política cultural contribuiu para se apreender as constantes trocas não só entre diferentes segmentos da sociedade, como também entre mundos distintos. Utilizando-se de um rico conjunto de fontes, Juliana consegue, a partir de leituras diversas e de um texto escrito com clareza, mapear o processo de construção da política cultural de D. João, combinando enfoques da história cultural e da nova história política. Por conseguinte, traz ao público leitor, em geral, novas informações e leituras que possibilitam a compreensão de um período histórico que abriu caminhos para a divisão do Império Português e para a construção de um novo Império – o Império Brasílico – em 1822."
