For various reasons it was not revised and edited for publication at that time. In view of the important events currently transpiring in and around the agricultural sector of Colombia and the possible usefulness of additional historical material, it is now being published essentially as it was left in the late 1960s. I have not reviewed the available material in detail recently, so their may be errors of fact that I am not aware of, either in the numbers presented or of other sorts. Many useful studies of Colombian agriculture have been undertaken in the interim, though they may not have covered the same material as included here. Because of the unrevised nature of the material the mode of presentation varies from chapter to chapter. Table numbers are not continuous (i.e. there may be no Table 5 in a given chapter) but their order has been maintained, sometimes through the use of decimals (e.g. Table 10.1).

This book is a philosophical exploration of the theoretical causes behind the collapse of classical cybernetics. Alcibiades Malapi-Nelson advances the idea that the cybernetic understanding of the nature of a machine entails ontological and epistemological consequences that create both material and theoretical conundrums. He proposes that, given our current state of materials, research, and practices, there might be a way for cybernetics to flourish. The book starts with a historical treatment of cybernetics, and proceeds with a philosophical explanation of its collapse—emphasizing the work of Turing, Ashby and von Neumann—and connects it with the emerging technologies carrying its signature. The transhumanist metaphysics of both cybernetics and NBIC is then unveiled. Finally, avenues of research that may allow these technologies to circumvent the cybernetic fate are indicated. It is advanced that emerging technologies ultimately entail an affirmation of humanity. .

The relationship between theory and practice, between norms indicated in a text and their extra-textual application, is one of the most fascinating issues in the history and theory of science. Yet this aspect has often been taken for granted and never explored in depth. The essays contained in this volume provide a multi-layered and nuanced discussion of this relationship as it emerges in ancient Greek and Roman culture in a number of fields, such as agriculture, architecture, the art of love, astronomy, ethics, mechanics, medicine and pharmacology. The main focus is on the textuality of processes of transmission of knowledge and its application in various fields. Given that a text always contains complex and destabilizing aspects that cannot be reduced to the specific subject matter it discusses, to what extent can and do ancient texts support extra-textual applicability?

Threatening pests or threatened beneficials? Biting midges are wonderful insects. The animals are so tiny and uniquely shaped that they are particularly good at pollinating the small and tight flowers of the cocoa tree. Without them, there would be much less chocolate. We associate other insects more with the damage that they cause. Mosquitoes and wasps bite us. Moth larvae damage textiles and contaminate foods. Ants undermine our paths and flies are just a pain. But what exactly is our relationship with insects? Are they more beneficial or harmful? What role do they play in the world? What are the effects of climate change: Will the number of insects continue to increase? This book discusses the beneficial and harmful effects of insects and explains their development and significance for biodiversiy. .

The author shows that advisory boards in technology-based startups have seven different roles and functions: control, advice, networking, signalling, capital provision, co-management, coordination. It is shown that venture capital investors try to influence the importance of these roles in favour of control, coordination and co-management. Contrary to this, the satisfaction of founders as well as advisory board members increases with a higher importance of advice, networking and signalling. This analysis provides both qualitative and quantitative empirical data on the usage of those boards in practice. Contents Literature Review of Research on Governing Boards Roles of Governing Boards Explained through Agency Theory, Resource Dependency Theory, Stewardship Theory, Stakeholder Theory, Institutional Theory and Managerial Hegemony Exploring Roles Using Qualitative and Quantitative Methods Recommendations How to Use Advisory Boards in Practice Target Groups Researchers and students of business-related fields, particular entrepreneurship and corporate governance Entrepreneurs and investors, especially in the context of technology-based startups The Author Eric Weber co-founded SpinLab – The HHL Accelerator, a program that supports technology-based entrepreneurs in cooperation with HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, where he worked as research associate and startup coach and dealt with the field of entrepreneurship from both a practical and theoretical perspective.
