Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Dialogues and conflicts have become related topics. With all the resources, academic, financial and religious, interreligious dialogue is yet to achieve the expectations of peace among religious people. Searching through the works of many thinkers, from Plato, Rousseau, Buber and Bohm through de Chardin, von Balthasar, Rahner and Daniélou to Tracy, Jeanrond and Moyaert, this study discovers the missing link between interreligious dialogues and its practicability in the public, and proffers solutions.

Abstract

"Building on and echoing Averil Cameron's series of articles entitled New Themes, New Styles, the contributors to this volume wished to revisit the phenomenon of enhanced, renewed, or invented, literary and artistic modes of expression in the period after the great authorities of the patristic age until early Islamic times. In the period under investigation, that is the fifth to the eighth centuries, scholars may point to a transformation of artistic expressions in a number of ways. One such example is a marked increase in reductionist activity on the one hand, and the disappearance of classicising historiography on the other. In this volume, a number of experts from a variety of disciplines - studies in Late Antiquity and Byzantium, Arabic studies, Jewish studies, Syriac studies, and Art History - have come together to form a unique platform where the dynamic nature of Late Antique societies is portrayed against the background of the advent of Islam. Some rich encounters are revealed."--

Abstract

Abstract

The religious histories of Christian and Muslim countries in Europe and Western Asia are often treated in isolation from one another. This can lead to a limited and simplistic understanding of the international and interreligious interactions currently taking place. This edited collection brings these national and religious narratives into conversation with each other, helping readers to formulate a more sophisticated comprehension of the social and cultural factors involved in the tolerance and intolerance that has taken place in these areas, and continues today.Part One of this volume examines the history of relations between people of different Christian confessions in western and central Europe. Part Two then looks at the relations between Western and Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Islam and Judaism in the vast area that extends around the Mediterranean from the Iberian Peninsula to western Asia. Each Part ends with a Conclusion that considers the wider implications of the preceding essays and points the way toward future research.Bringing together scholars from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and America this volume embodies an international collaboration of unusual range. Its comparative approach will be of interest to scholars of Religion and History, particularly those with an emphasis on interreligious relations and religious tolerance.

Abstract

In recent years, martyrdom and political violence have been conflated in the public imagination. Rubén Rosario Rodríguez argues that martyr narratives deserve consideration as resources for resisting political violence in contemporary theological reflection. Underlying the three Abrahamic monotheistic traditions is a shared belief that God requires liberation for the oppressed, justice for the victims and, most demanding of all, love for the political enemy. Christian, Jewish and Muslim martyr narratives that condone political violence - whether terrorist or state-sponsored - are examined alongside each religion's canon, in order to evaluate how central or marginalized these discourses are within their respective traditions. Primarily a work of Christian theology in conversation with Judaism and Islam, this book aims to model religious pluralism and cooperation by retrieving distinctly Christian sources that nurture tolerance and facilitate coexistence, while respecting religious difference.

Abstract

How can divergent and conflicting claims to truth be voiced in a dialogical manner that would facilitate a constructive approach towards diversity and difference without entailing a compulsion to define a consensus? With an eye toward this focal question, this volume provides an interdisciplinary contribution to contemporary debates on pluralism.
