Abstract

"Absorbing and smart." Elisabeth M. Prϋgl, author of Transforming Masculine Rule Manufacturing Urgency investigates anti-violence policies in international development, demonstrating that strategies intended to end violence against women are constructed to serve ends other than the needs of women. Through careful consideration of anti-violence initiatives--including "The Hillary Doctrine," the World Bank's "The Cost of Violence," and the United Nation's "UNiTE To End Violence Against Women" campaigns--Corinne Mason shows how these projects are technocratic, depoliticized, and executed in a manner that serves the interest of neoliberal economic growth and security concerns, at the expense of a more holistic, effective, and accountable approach. "An impressive contribution.Mason's work is transdisciplinary, and theoretically sophisticated. She weaves together critical race, disability and feminist theory, literature on violence, development studies and their impact on policy with beautiful results. Undoubtedly, this book will situate her among the leading thinkers in the fields of transnational feminism and development." - Elora Halim Chowdhury, author of Transnationalism Reversed: Women Organizing Against Gendered Violence in Bangladesh

Abstract

Have you ever wondered what makes storytelling and digital media a powerful combination? This edited volume examines the opportunities to think, do, and/or create jointly afforded by digital storytelling. The editors of this volume contend that digital storytelling and digital media can create spaces of empowerment and transformation by facilitating multiple kinds of border crossings and convergences involving groups of peoples, places, knowledge, methodologies, and teaching pedagogies. The book is unique in its inclusion of anthropologists and education practitioners and its emphasis on multiple subfields in anthropology. The contributors discuss digital storytelling in the context of educational programs, teaching anthropology, and ethnographic research involving a variety of populations and subjects that will appeal to researchers and practitioners engaged with qualitative methods and pedagogies that rely on media technology.

Abstract

This new Policy Press Short presents innovative international research into how the term "environment" is understood within families and how that plays out in everyday lives. Based on a study that involved creative qualitative work with families in India and the United Kingdom, it shows how environmental practices are negotiated in families, and how they relate to values, identities, and society. Through that analysis, we begin to see the ways in which families and childhood are constructed as sites for intervention in debates about climate change.

Abstract

This volume explores the relevance of time travel as a characteristic contemporary way to approach the past. If reality is defined as the sum of human experiences and social practices, all reality is partly virtual, and all experienced and practiced time travel is real. In that sense, time travel experiences are not necessarily purely imaginary. Time travel experiences and associated social practices have become ubiquitous and popular, increasingly replacing more knowledge-orientated and critical approaches to the past. The papers in this book explore various types and methods of time travel and seek to prove that time travel is a legitimate and timely object of study and critique because it represents a particularly significant way to bring the past back to life in the present.

Abstract

The potential role of vocational education in Austria, Germany and Switzerland was the topic of the Fifth Austrian Conference on Vocational Education and Training Research 2016 (5. Österreichische Berufsbildungsforschungskonferenz 2016). The debate revolved around the expectations of vocational education, for example whether it promotes social integration and mobility, if it can be understood as a driver of innovation and whether it is capable of providing employment impulses.
