This book explores generalized Lorenz–Mie theories when the illuminating beam is an electromagnetic arbitrary shaped beam relying on the method of separation of variables. The new edition includes an additional chapter covering the latest advances in both research and applications, which are highly relevant for readers. Although it particularly focuses on the homogeneous sphere, the book also considers other regular particles. It discusses in detail the methods available for evaluating beam shape coefficients describing the illuminating beam. In addition it features applications used in many fields such as optical particle sizing and, more generally, optical particle characterization, morphology-dependent resonances and the mechanical effects of light for optical trapping, optical tweezers and optical stretchers. Furthermore, it provides various computer programs relevant to the content.

This book examines the native Irish experience of conquest and colonisation in Ulster in the first decades of the seventeenth century. Central to this argument is that the Ulster plantation bears more comparisons to European expansion throughout the Atlantic than (as some historians have argued) the early-modern state’s consolidation of control over its peripheral territories. Farrell also demonstrates that plantation Ulster did not see any significant attempt to transform the Irish culturally or economically in these years, notwithstanding the rhetoric of a ‘civilising mission’. Challenging recent scholarship on the integrative aspects of plantation society, he argues that this emphasis obscures the antagonism which characterised relations between native and newcomer until the eve of the 1641 rising. This book is of interest not only to students of early-modern Ireland but is also a valuable contribution to the burgeoning field of Atlantic history and indeed colonial studies in general.

Plaidoyer en faveur de l'Union européenne, ce livre critique néanmoins certains choix culturels qu'elle a faits lors de sa fondation et qui entravent aujourd'hui son intégration. Elle doit rebâtir ses fondements symboliques et redéfinir sa relation avec les nations (à ne pas confondre avec les États). Les orientations culturelles qu'elle a privilégiées à sa naissance lui ont permis de connaître un essor rapide, mais faute de les réviser à temps, elles sont devenues dysfonctionnelles. Or, les tentatives qu'elle a faites ultérieurement pour se donner de nouveaux mythes et une identité continentale ont échoué. Par ailleurs, les leaders de l'Union se sont toujours méfiés des nations et des nationalismes, accusés d'avoir provoqué les horreurs des deux guerres mondiales. Ils ont donc voulu les contourner en instituant une gouvernance par le haut d'où a résulté un déficit démocratique. L'Union devra désormais s'employer à se réconcilier avec les nations, en les réhabilitant, et à tirer profit de leurs ressources symboliques pour se doter de mythes ayant une résonance à la fois nationale et européenne.
