Abstract

Abstract

Proteomic Profiling and Analytical Chemistry: The Crossroads, Second Edition helps scientists without a strong background in analytical chemistry to understand principles of the multistep proteomic experiment necessary for its successful completion. It also helps researchers who do have an analytical chemistry background to break into the proteomics field. Highlighting points of junction between proteomics and analytical chemistry, this resource links experimental design with analytical measurements, data analysis, and quality control. This targeted point of view will help both biologists and chemists to better understand all components of a complex proteomic study. The book provides detailed coverage of experimental aspects such as sample preparation, protein extraction and precipitation, gel electrophoresis, microarrays, dynamics of fluorescent dyes, and more. The key feature of this book is a direct link between multistep proteomic strategy and quality control routinely applied in analytical chemistry. This second edition features a new chapter on SWATH-MS, substantial updates to all chapters, including proteomic database search and analytical quantification, expanded discussion of post-hoc statistical tests, and additional content on validation in proteomics.--

Abstract

When it comes to centralize the production of many production tools into one place in order to raise the production capacity, a company can face many difficulties and challenges to manage the additional costs that appear with the new investments. Actually, the meal’s cost is calculated according to a repartition of the salary and infrastructure costs on the different steps or phases of the principal value chain of the central kitchen (Porter, 1985). However, this does not take into account every final product’s characteristics, or else specific processes that intervene in their preparation. Therefore supplementary costs have to be attributed on the different phases of the central kitchen. After that, a cost is established for every customer consuming all or part of these processes based on the type of meals they order. The objective of this project is twofold. On the one hand, it aims at determining the total and unitary cost of each phase of the value chain of the central kitchen to permit, in the end, to calculate the unitary cost for each client. On the second hand, it provides the CEO some insights about these costs and proposes guidelines to reduce them. The first part of this report presents the number of meals for the year 2015 ordered by customer. The second part is about the estimation of the resources used by each process to determine their total cost. The third part is concerned by the calculation of the unitary cost for each process, but also for each customer. The fourth and final part builds on the analysis of the costs obtained in the previous parts in order to propose solutions that aims at both reducing costs and increasing the margin for each single customer.

Abstract

This book presents two main sets of paper-based analytical systems. The first set is a platform for the analysis of glucose, cholesterol and uric acid in biological samples, and the second set is a cutting-edge electronic tongue system for the analysis of beverages (mineral water, beer, wine). This thesis also provides an extensive review of 33 methods of enzyme immobilization on paper which have been evaluated to enhance the storage stability of the proposed system for biomarker detection. From a practical perspective, this thesis covers a diverse set of topics related to paper-based sensing, including colorimetric and electrochemical detection methods, different sets of architecture (spot-tests, lateral and tangential flow assays), methods of fabrication (wax printing, cutting, impregnation with polymers), measurements in stationary and flow conditions as well computer modeling of proposed systems and sophisticated data analysis using chemometric techniques. This book is useful for PhD students working in this or a related field who require detailed information about methodology and background to this research. .

Abstract

This book is designed to integrate the basic concepts of food safety with current developments and challenges in food safety and authentication. The first part describes basics of food safety, classification of food toxins, regulation and risk assessment. The second part focuses on particular toxins like mycotoxins, aromatic amines, heavy metals, pesticides, and polycyclic hydrocarbons. Recent developments and improvements in the detection of these contaminants are described. The third part deals with the authenticity and adulteration of food and food products, a topic which affects food trade on a national and international level. .

Abstract

This book describes the fundamental concepts, the latest developments and the outlook of the field of nanozymes (i.e., the catalytic nanomaterials with enzymatic characteristics). As one of today’s most exciting fields, nanozyme research lies at the interface of chemistry, biology, materials science and nanotechnology. Each of the book’s six chapters explores advances in nanozymes. Following an introduction to the rise of nanozymes research in the course of research on natural enzymes and artificial enzymes in Chapter 1, Chapters 2 through 5 discuss different nanomaterials used to mimic various natural enzymes, from carbon-based and metal-based nanomaterials to metal oxide-based nanomaterials and other nanomaterials. In each of these chapters, the nanomaterials’ enzyme mimetic activities, catalytic mechanisms and key applications are covered. In closing, Chapter 6 addresses the current challenges and outlines further directions for nanozymes. Presenting extensive information on nanozymes and supplemented with a wealth of color illustrations and tables, the book offers an ideal guide for readers from disparate areas, including analytical chemistry, materials science, nanoscience and nanotechnology, biomedical and clinical engineering, environmental science and engineering, green chemistry, and novel catalysis.

Abstract

This book explains how the partial differential equations (pdes) in electroanalytical chemistry can be solved numerically. It guides the reader through the topic in a very didactic way, by first introducing and discussing the basic equations along with some model systems as test cases systematically. Then it outlines basic numerical approximations for derivatives and techniques for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Finally, more complicated methods for approaching the pdes are derived. The authors describe major implicit methods in detail and show how to handle homogeneous chemical reactions, even including coupled and nonlinear cases. On this basis, more advanced techniques are briefly sketched and some of the commercially available programs are discussed. In this way the reader is systematically guided and can learn the tools for approaching his own electrochemical simulation problems. This new fourth edition has been carefully revised, updated and extended compared to the previous edition (Lecture Notes in Physics Vol. 666). It contains new material describing migration effects, as well as arrays of ultramicroelectrodes. It is thus the most comprehensive and didactic introduction to the topic of electrochemical simulation.
