Pragmatics, as a part of linguistic competence, can be defined as the ability of a person to use language across different social contexts. In the last two decades the study of the development and use of pragmatic language skills in children with intellectual disabilities has known a remarkable growth. Pragmatic abilities of this population are an interesting study area because of their connection to cognition, social skills, functional everyday communication and quality of life. Some genetic syndromes place children at risk to develop a pragmatic language impairment. This study focuses on two microdeletion syndromes: Williams syndrome (7q11.23) and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2 DS).Although both syndromes show distinctive neuropsychological and behavioral profiles, both groups seem to have difficulties with certain receptive and expressive pragmatic language skills. Until present research on their pragmatic disabilities is rather fragmentary and mostly based on observations or anecdotal descriptions. The first aim of this study is to delineate a broader pragmatic language profile by means of conversation analysis, narrative assessment and referential communication tasks. Secondly we want to describe the relationship between language structure, language content and language use by comparing the pragmatic language results with standardized language measurements. We also connect the language profiles to cognitive profiles in the framework of the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model. We provide cross-sectional comparisons between the two syndromes, children with a mild to moderate intellectual disability (mixed etiology), children with a mild to moderate intellectual disability and comorbid autism spectrum disorder and a group of normal developing children. Finally a follow-up study will give us information on changes in the language and cognitive profiles through childhood . This allows us to give advice that better meets the needs of the child to parents, caregivers, teachers and speech and language pathologist at any moment in the development.

This study asks how speakers adjust their speech to their addressees, focusing on the potential roles of cognitive representations such as partner models, automatic processes such as interactive alignment, and social processes such as interactional negotiation. The nature of addressee orientation is investigated on three candidates for so-called 'simplified registers': speech to children (also called 'motherese' or 'baby talk'), speech to foreigners (also called 'foreigner talk') and speech to robots. The volume integrates research from various disciplines, such as psychology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and conversation analysis, and offers both overviews of child-directed, foreigner-directed and robot-directed speech and in-depth analyses of the processes involved in adjusting to a communication partner.

"In providing a thorough review of the field to date, the opening chapter considers some of the common and divergent interests and priorities that exist in social media discourse analysis. It also discusses the wider methodological and theoretical implications that social media analysis brings to the process of discourse analysis, as new forms of connections and communication call us to re-think the static models that we have been using. The rest of the collection draws on different traditions in discourse studies, including Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics, Foucaultian analysis and Multimodality, to bring several unique approaches to critically analysing social media from a discourse prospective. Each ground-breaking chapter shows how different forms of social media data can be best selected, analysed and dealt with critically."--The publisher.

This book provides the first comprehensive account of English-German pragmatic contrasts in written discourse and their effects on English-German translations. The novel and multi-dimensional corpus-based studies of business communication and popular science writing presented in this book combine quantitative and qualitative approaches and focus on the use of evaluative adjectives and epistemic modal markers. They provide empirical evidence that English and German differ in systematic ways and that translations, while being adapted to target audience’s preferences to a large extent, are clearly susceptible to source language interference when it comes to more fine-grained differences. The book discusses which general factors determine the degree of impact of source language features on translations and also comments on the possibility of source language influence on target language norms via translations. The book is of interest to researchers and students in a variety of fields, such as pragmatics, translation studies, genre analysis and stylistics.

Over the last two decades, the conceptualisation and empirical analysis of mobilities of people, objects and symbols has become an important strand of social science. Yet, the increasing importance of mobilities in all parts of the social does not only happen as observable practices in the material world but also takes place against the background of changing discourses, scientific theories and conceptualisations and knowledge. Within the formation of these mobilities discourses, the social sciences constitute a relevant actor. Focussing on mobility as an object of knowledge from a Foucauldian perspective rather than a given entity within the historical contingency of movement, this book asks: How do discourses and ideologies structure the normative substance, social meanings, and the lived reality of mobilities? What are the real world effects of/on the will and the ability to be mobile? And, how do these lived realities, in turn, invigorate or interfere with certain discourses and ideologies of mobility?

It was not until the 1960s, that a systematic science to study conversation and interaction started to develop. This text focuses on talk and interaction in institutional contexts, i.e. contexts where the interacting parties orient to the goal-rational, institutionalised nature of their action.

Examines the art of effective persuasion to argue that its secret lies in a key moment before messages are delivered, sharing strategies for how to psychologically prepare one's listeners to render them most receptive. Social psychologist Robert Cialdini shines a light on peak persuasion and reveals that the secret doesn't lie in the message itself, but in the key moment before the message is delivered. What separates average persuaders from extraordinarily successful ones? Using the same combination of rigorous scientific research and accessibility that made his Influence an iconic bestseller, Cialdini explains how the best communicators capitalize on "privileged moments for change," in which audiences become receptive to a message before they experience it. Optimal persuasion is achieved through optimal pre-suasion. To change minds, savvy pre-suaders first change "states of mind." Altering a listener's attitudes, beliefs, or experiences isn't necessary, says Cialdini--all that's required is to alter the audience's focus of attention just before requesting a relevant action. He draws on an array of studies and accounts, from successful online marketing campaigns to effective wartime propaganda efforts, illustrating how the artful channeling of attention leads to potent pre-suasion and positive outcomes.--Adapted from dust jacket.

Metapragmatics of Humor: Current research trends contributes to a new area in the pragmatics of humor: its conception as a metapragmatic ability. The book collects thirteen chapters organized into three parts: Revisions and applications of General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) in a metapragmatic context; Metapragmatic awareness of humor across textual modes; and Metapragmatic practices within the acquisition of humor. Thus, this book provides an up-to-date panorama of this field, where metapragmatic abilities are described in adults as well as in children, on humorous and non-humorous genres - jokes, cartoons, humorous monologues, parodies, conversation, Twitter -, and using several approaches, such as GTVH, multimodality, conversational analysis, eye-tracking methodology, etc.
