"Political Parties use numerous terms, such as party, "primaries", "one-member-one-vote" contests, party "plebiscites" and "community pre-selections" to describe their system of electing leadership. Likewise, their election processes differ just as much: some parties invite all interested citizens to participate, others impose a membership requirement, others require prior party activism, and still others choose to share the voting authority among different party constituents through a complicated "electoral college" process. In The Promise and Challenge of Party Primary Elections: A Comparative Perspective the authors construct a meaningful comparative study of these party contests both within and across different party systems. The authors focus their attention on the party primaries of two relatively early adopters of primary elections: Canada and Israel. Through these case studies the benefits and challenges of organizing primaries in a fair and efficient manner are considered in depth."--

A. Kadir Yildirim and other scholars have used the term "Muslim Democrat" to describe moderate Islamist political parties, suggesting a parallel with Christian Democratic parties in Europe. These parties (MDPs) are marked by their adherence to a secular political regime, normative commitment to the rules of a democratic political system, and the democratic political representation of a religious identity. In this book, Yildirim draws on extensive field research in Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco to examine this phenomenon and assess the interaction of economic and political factors in the development of MDPs. Distinguishing between "competitive [economic] liberalization" and "crony liberalization," he argues that MDPs are more likely to emerge and succeed in the context of the former. He summarizes that the broader implication is that the economic liberalization models adopted by governments in the region in the wake of the Arab Spring have significant implications for the future direction of party systems and democratic reform.

This book presents research focusing on the Vietnam Nationalist Party (Việt Nam Quốc dân đảng) from 1927 to 1954. It elaborates on the party’s establishment, political ideology and organizational structure, the Yen Bai Uprising, the party’s downfall, and its role in the Vietnamese Revolution. Findings are presented systematically and comprehensively, relying on official and unofficial, as well as domestic and foreign sources, including texts from localities and hometowns of vital figures in the organization. The author compares, contrasts and evaluates this complex collection of documents based on the theoretical perspectives of conflict theory, social system theory, social structuralism and functionism, dialectic materialism and Marxist theory. It is essential reading for Vietnamese and international researchers interested in Vietnam’s political context in the early twentieth century and for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Vietnam’s history and politics. .

This work challenges assumptions made in literature on representative democracy and argues that cabinet ministers can have very important policy role as policy agenda setters. The book answers questions about the role of the individual in the policy-making process, and shows that the process of ministerial selection is critical to policy-making.

This volume analyzes regime politics in the developing world. By focusing on the civilian, collective actors that forge democracy and sustain it, this book moves beyond materialist arguments focusing on GDP, poverty, and inequality. With case material from four continents, this volume emphasizes the decisive role played by parties and movements in forging democracy against the odds. These pivotal collectivities are consistently the key civilian collectivities that successfully mobilized for democracy, that helped forge enduring democratic institutions, and that shaped the quality of the democracies that emerged; they are the ones tasked with mobilizing along a range of social cleavages, confronting seemingly inhospitable conditions, and coordinating the process of regime change. While the presence of parties and movements alone is not sufficient to explain democracy, their absence is detrimental to enduring democratic regimes. Thus, this volume refocuses our attention on parties and movements as critical mechanisms of regime change.
