Media Today uses convergence as a lens that puts students at the center of the profound changes in the 21st century media world. Through the convergence lens they learn to think critically about the role of media today and what these changes mean for their lives presently and in the future. The book's media systems approach helps students to look carefully at how media content is created, distributed, and exhibited in the new world that the digital revolution has created. From newspapers to video games and social networking to mobile platforms, Media Today prepares students to live in the digital world of media.

"Social media has had a profound, and as yet not fully understood impact on public relations. In the 24/7 world of perpetually-connected publics, will public relations function as a dark art that spins (or tweets) the truth for credulous publics? Or must public relations be reconceptualized under the full glare of the internet and the expectations of increasingly powerful publics? The purpose of this book is to examine the role of public relations in social media through an exploration of the myriad ways that social media is reshaping its core concepts and activities. In particular, it examines the dichotomies of fake and authentic, powerful and powerless, meaning and meaningful. It also examines the key transgressions committed by practitioners: the paucity of digital literacy, a widespread lack of understanding of the norms of social media, a naivety about the corporate identity risks, and a prevalent emphasis on spin and persuasion rather than on authentic engagement. This challenging and fascinating book will be of interest to all students, researchers and practitioners in Public Relations, Media and Communication Studies"--

Li (City Univ. of Hong Kong) examines in detail many factors of 21st-century media use. The author uses theory and empirical research to examine complexities of issues such as the adoption pattern for podcasting, online copyright infringement, and free expression through micro-blogging (services such as Twitter and Tumblr). A unique aspect is the application of varied research methods. The chapters make use of experiments, surveys, and content analysis methodologies. The theoretical applications come from the world of communications research, such as diffusion of innovations, but are also drawn from fields such as criminology (deterrence theory). Comparing this text to others more than a few years old makes little sense because Twitter began in 2006. As Li points out, ?the world changes much faster than what researchers can follow.? The term emerging media is rather vague, and Li sometimes uses it to refer to devices, such as smartphones; sometimes software, such as social media apps; and sometimes the internet itself. Despite this, the research is solid and useful to scholars, at least until it, too, inevitably becomes outdated.

In an interactive and densely connected world, transnational communication has become a central feature of everyday life. Taking account of a variety of media formats and different regions of the world, Adrian Athique provides a much-needed critical exploration of conceptual approaches to media reception on a global scale. Engaging both the historical foundations and contemporary concerns of audience research, Athique prompts us to reconsider our contemporary media experience within a transnational frame. In the process, he provides valuable insights on culture and belonging, power and imagination. Beautifully written and strongly argued, Transnational Audiences: Media Reception on a Global Scale will be essential reading for students and teachers of global media, culture and communications.
