""Die Sprachwissenschaft"" is the magnum opus of the German sinologist and linguist Georg von der Gabelentz (1840-1893), a late 19th-century representative of the Humboldtian tradition of linguistic research. The book exists in two versions: a first edition of 1891 and a second posthumous edition of 1901, revised and expanded by Albrecht Graf von der Schulenburg (1865-1902), a nephew and pupil of Gabelentz. This critical edition presents for the first time the text of the two editions in a form that allows them to be easily compared. It represents a valuable resource for historiographical research into linguistics on the eve of the 20th century." Despite prodigious developments in the field of language assessment in the Middle East and the Pacific Rim, research and practice in these areas have been underrepresented in mainstream literature. This volume takes a fresh look at language assessment in these regions, and provides a unique overview of contemporary language assessment research. In compiling this book, the editors have tapped into the knowledge of language and educational assessment experts whose diversity of perspectives and experience has enriched the focus and scope of language and educational assessment in general, and the

This textbook discusses the basics of linguistic text analysis from a present-day viewpoint. Its special concern is to underline the commonalities existing between many of the text-linguistic approaches that have been proposed, and to provide a well-defined overview of descriptive aspects. The new edition has been revised, updated and significantly expanded.

In On Truth and Lies in an Extra-Moral Sense (1873), written a year after The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche addresses critical questions in the philosophy of language by inquiring into the sine qua nons for thought. Initially laid out as a collection of personal reflections, this essay went on in the 20th century to be regarded as a critical paradigm for thought on language philosophy and aesthetics.

In the past 15 years, English as a lingua franca (ELF) has evolved from a ‘niche topic’ of a relatively small group of specialists to a highly productive research area that now has a firm place on the map of linguistics. Looking back (as well as forward), this edited volume addresses perspectives and prospects of ELF in connection with other areas of linguistics. It is the first volume that brings together ELF scholars with experts from a wide range of areas in linguistics (such as corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, language pedagogy, language policy, intercultural communication). Adopting an inter-/transdisciplinary approach, the book traces the impact that discussions about ELF have had – or may have – beyond the study of ELF as such: for the conceptualization, description, methodology, pedagogy and politics of ‘English’. As the book combines external perspectives on ELF, provided by well-known scholars in diverse fields, with a smaller number of internal perspectives provided by prominent ELF scholars, it will be of interest not only to students and researchers interested in ELF, but also to students and scholars in Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics and Intercultural Communication.

This collection gathers contributions from scholars from Poland and abroad addressing different facets of research into the processes of foreign-language and second-language learning and teaching as they transpire in a typical language classroom. The book is divided into three parts, which address in turn: research directions and methodology, the findings of empirical research, and links between theoretical considerations and classroom practice. Accordingly, the first part includes papers that examine the role of different research paradigms, put forward concrete research proposals, present innovative data gathering tools or assess the role of such instruments in language teaching. The second part includes reports on original research studies focusing e.g. on teachers’ beliefs, the role of lexis and pragmatics, the application of modern technologies, the teaching and assessment of primary school children, and the development of social skills from a cross-cultural perspective. Finally, the third part of the book demonstrates how theory-driven approaches can enhance the effectiveness of instructed second language acquisition.
