Gli interventi sono firmati dai maggiori specialisti in materia: Ottavio Besomi, Riccardo Bruscagli, Maria Luisa Meneghetti, Maria Grazia Capusso, Marco Infurna, Frej Moretti, Marco Villoresi, Stefano Carrai, Cristina Montagnani, Francesco Ferretti, Paola Casella, Antonia Tissoni Benvenuti, Cristina Dondi e Neil Harris, Luca Degl'Innocenti, Tina Matarrese, Andrea Canova, Gabriele Bucchi, Jane E. Everson, Daniela Delcorno Branca, Leslie Zarker Morgan, Marina Beer.

Charlemagne is one of the few medieval figures to have maintained a constant presence in the cultural memory of later ages. One of the main factors in this phenomenon is the literary production that set in immediately after his death, with its tendency to model the figure of the Emperor in accordance with the interests of the authors, and frequently to elevate him to a mythical status. While the images of Charlemagne that came about in this way in the European literatures between the 9th and the 15th century obviously differ somewhat, they are in some cases astonishingly consistent throughout the period in question. They are presented here for the first time in one volume, and analyzed from the various perspectives adopted by different disciplines.

"When Charlemagne died in 814 CE, he left behind a dominion and a legacy unlike anything seen in Western Europe since the fall of Rome. Distinguished historian and author of The Middle Ages Johannes Fried presents a new biographical study of the legendary Frankish king and emperor, illuminating the life and reign of a ruler who shaped Europe's destiny in ways few figures, before or since, have equaled. Living in an age of faith, Charlemagne was above all a Christian king, Fried says. He made his court in Aix la Chapelle the center of a religious and intellectual renaissance, enlisting the Anglo Saxon scholar Alcuin of York to be his personal tutor, and insisting that monks be literate and versed in rhetoric and logic. He erected a magnificent cathedral in his capital, decorating it lavishly while also dutifully attending Mass every morning and evening. And to an extent greater than any ruler before him, Charlemagne enhanced the papacy's influence, becoming the first king to enact the legal principle that the pope was beyond the reach of temporal justice a decision with fateful consequences for European politics for centuries afterward. Though devout, Charlemagne was not saintly. He was a warrior king, intimately familiar with violence and bloodshed. And he enjoyed worldly pleasures, including physical love. Though there are aspects of his personality we can never know with certainty, Fried paints a compelling portrait of a ruler, a time, and a kingdom that deepens our understanding of the man often called "the father of Europe."-- Provided by publisher.

This book explores the multiplicity of ways in which the Charlemagne legend was recorded in Latin texts of the central and later Middle Ages, moving beyond some of the earlier canonical "raw materials", such as Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni, to focus on productions of the eleventh to fifteenth centuries. A distinctive feature of the volume's coverage is the diversity of Latin textual environments and genres that the contributors examine in their work, including chronicles, liturgy and pseudo-histories, as well as apologetical treatises and works of hagiography and literature. Perhaps most importantly, the book examines the "many lives" that Charlemagne was believed to have lived by successive generations of medieval Latin writers, for whom he was not only a king and an emperor but also a saint, a crusader, and, indeed, a necrophiliac.

The legend of Charlemagne is a strong motif in the literature of medieval and early modern Spain. The essays in this volume consider the narration of both the historical and imaginary events across different genres; how the figure of Charlemagne evolved and diversified; and the importance and influence of the Charlemagne legends in literary and historical culture during the middle ages and beyond.
