As the definition of ‘designer’ expands and architects today create everything from jewelry to urban masterplans, a new wave of objects ranging from furniture to small-scale architectural inventions is transforming our interior spaces. Boosted by digital design and manufacturing possibilities, a rising global group of independent ‘makers’ is making this crossover of furniture and architecture one of the hottest and most innovative fields of design. Furnitecture presents some two hundred examples of this new design typology, by renowned architects and designers from around the globe, including Danish studio KiBiSi’s design for a reconfigurable bookshelf system, Japanese architect Shigeru Ban’s moving boxes within rooms, Dutch designers Makkink & Bey’s conversational Ear Chairs and French atelier 37.2’s series of self-standing cubes.

Coinciding with 'What Design Can Do Live Amsterdam 2016', this book presents a selection of 31 design projects that change Africa and inspire the world. Many African countries experience an economic upturn causing a cultural upswing as well. Everywhere both in and outside Africa artists, designers, architects and musicians of African origin are emerging, contributing to what the South African singer Yannick Ilunga (25) alias Petite Noir has called the Noir Wave. By offering the stage to some of the leading African designers What Design Can Do expects to bring a different perspective to the discussion on international cooperation, identity of continents and social questions. Possible topics to be discussed are: aging population, urban issues, cultural consciousness, freedom of speech, refugees, high-tech/low-tech and nature. Speakers addressing this theme include Juliana Rotich (Kenya), Selly Raby Kane (Senegal), Ravi Naidoo (South Africa), Christian Benimana (Rwanda), Kunlé Adeyemi (Nigeria), Simon Kennedy & Michael Uwemedimo (Nigeria), and Zapiro (South Africa).

Only when the perfect balance between visual beauty and functional performance is achieved, can a product provide a consistent and successful user experience. The discipline of CMF design focuses on designing and specifying colours, materials and finishes to support both functional and emotional attributes of products. The work of the CMF designer combines aesthetics and practical knowledge of materials and technologies with intangible human perceptions of value. Introducing the CMF process and detailing the areas of colour, material and finish design, this book serves as a valuable source of information about this emerging professional discipline and its fundamental principles.

In devising a concept for the Abbildungen exhibition, Konstantin Grcic thought back to one of his earliest designs, an additional pedestal for a sculpture by Constantin Brancusi. This became the leitmotif of his staging of twenty-one selected objects. The exhibition is the underpinning for the conception of this publication, which turns its gaze on the media-framing of Grcic's design objects. First researched in early magazines, company prospectuses, flyers and other print media, the selected pieces are presented here as reproductions of reproductions. The publication is accompanied by an in-depth analysis by Robin Schuldenfrei, Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, who, in presenting Konstantin Grcic's oeuvre to the German-speaking world, examines it from a historical perspective for the first time. Finally, the staged gallery spaces at Kunsthalle Bielefeld are documented in photographs by Wolfgang Gunzel, Offenbach. Exhibition: Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Germany (19.03.-03.07.2016).
