Abstract

Euclio, a poor peasant, finds a pot of gold which he is terrified of losing; he hides it in his house. He has a daughter Phaedrium who is (unknown to Euclio) pregnant, having been raped by the young man Lyconides. Lyconides' rich uncle Megadorus plans to marry Phaedrium precisely because she is poor. Euclio reluctantly agrees, but when he finds his house full of people preparing for the wedding feast he takes the gold and tries to find somewhere else to hide it. Lyconides' slave becomes aware of this and manages to steal the gold. Meanwhile Lyconides, who is aware of his obligation to Phaedrium, learns of his uncle's plan and gets his mother to persuade his uncle to abandon it. The moment when he explains the situation to Euclio is just the moment when Eulcio has found out that his gold has been stolen. Lyconides soon finds out that his own slave is the thief. From here on the text is lost. The end of the play is given in the ancient summaries: Lyconides gets his slave to give Euclio back his gold. Euclio, understanding that his obsession with keeping the gold caused him only unhappiness, presents both it and his daughter to Lyconides. Provides the first detailed commentary on the text for over a century; Critically examines the various options that have been proposed for the end of the play, its construction and influence on subsequent classical drama; Provides a detailed and comprehensive background to the writing, performance and transmission of the play in its ancient Roman setting.

Abstract

Roman plays have been well studied individually (even including fragmentary or spurious ones more recently). However, they have not always been placed into their ‘context’, though plays (just like items in other literary genres) benefit from being seen in context. This edited collection aims to address this issue: it includes 33 contributions by an international team of scholars, discussing single plays or Roman dramatic genres (including comedy, tragedy and praetexta, from both the Republican and imperial periods) in contexts such as the literary tradition, the relationship to works in other literary genres, the historical and social situation, the intellectual background or the later reception. Overall, they offer a rich panorama of the role of Roman drama or individual plays in Roman society and literary history. The insights gained thereby will be of relevance to everyone interested in Roman drama or literature more generally, comparative literature or drama and theatre studies. This contextual approach has the potential of changing the way in which Roman drama is viewed.

Abstract

Abstract

"Alongside the works of the better-known classical Greek dramatists, the tragedies of Lucius Annaeus Seneca have exerted a profound influence over the dramaturgical development of European theatre. 'The Senecan Aesthetic' surveys the multifarious ways in which Senecan tragedy has been staged, from the Renaissance up to the present day: plundered for neo-Latin declamation and seeping into the blood-soaked revenge tragedies of Shakespeare's contemporaries, seasoned with French neoclassical rigour, and inflated by Restoration flamboyance. In the mid-18th century, the pincer movement of naturalism and philhellenism began to squeeze Seneca off the stage until August Wilhelm Schlegel's shrill denunciation silenced what he called its 'frigid bombast'. The Senecan aesthetic, repressed but still present, staged its return in the twentieth century in the work of Antonin Artaud, who regarded Seneca as "the greatest tragedian of history." This volume restores Seneca to a canonical position among the playwrights of antiquity, recognizing him as one of the most important, most revered, and most reviled, and in doing so reveals how theory, practice, and scholarship have always been interdependent and inseparable."

Abstract

In Brill's Companion to the Reception of Senecan Tragedy , Eric Dodson-Robinson incorporates essays by specialists working across disciplines and national literatures into a subtle narrative tracing the diverse scholarly, literary and theatrical receptions of Seneca's tragedies. The tragedies, influential throughout the Roman world well beyond Seneca's time, plunge into obscurity in Late Antiquity and nearly disappear during the Middle Ages. Profound consequences follow from the rediscovery of a dusty manuscript containing nine plays attributed to Seneca: it is seminal to both the renaissance of tragedy and the birth of Humanism. Canonical Western writers from Antiquity to the present have revisited, transformed, and eviscerated Senecan precedents to develop, in Dodson-Robinson's words, 'competing tragic visions of agency and the human place in the universe.'
