Our relation to rejectamenta includes much more than shedding and tossing. We maintain intimate bonds with the dumped and discarded. Scavenging with abandon from sundry sources, Spelman explores the extent to which we rely on trash and waste to make sense of our lives and to shape connections among us.

Ever since Plato's 'Republic' was written over two thousand years ago, one of the main concerns of social philosophy and later empirical social science was to understand the moral nature of human beings. The faculty to think and act in terms of overarching moral values is as much a defining hallmark of our species as is our intelligence, so homo moralis is no less an appropriate term to describe humans as homo sapiens. This volume makes a case for the pivotal role of social psychology as the core discipline for studying morality. The book is divided into four parts. First, the role of social psychological processes in moral values and judgments is discussed, followed by an analysis of the role of morality in interpersonal processes. The sometimes paradoxical, ironic effects of moral beliefs are described next, and in the final section the role of morality in collective and group behavior is considered. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in the social and behavioral sciences concerned with moral behavior, as well as professionals and practitioners in clinical, counseling, organizational, marketing and educational psychology where issues of ethics and morality are of importance.

This collection explores the central importance of values and evaluative concepts in cross-cultural translational encounters. Written by a group of international scholars from a diverse range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds, the chapters in this book consider what it means to translate cultures by examining core values and their relationship to key evaluative concepts (such as authenticity, clarity, home, honour, or justice) and how they influence the complex multidimensional process of translation. This book will be of interest to academics studying cross-cultural and inter-linguistic interactions, to translators and interpreters, students of translation and of modern languages, and all those dealing with multilingual and multicultural settings. Piotr Blumczynski is Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting at Queen’s University Belfast. His research and teaching focus on translation theory and practice, translation of sacred texts, ethics, ethnolinguisti cs and cognitive semantics. He has published two monographs: Doctrine in Translation (2006) and Ubiquitous Translation (2016). He is Associate Editor of the journal Translation Studies. John Gillespie is Professor of French Language and Literature (Emeritus), a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Institute and a former Head of Languages and Literature at Ulster University. Apart from translation studies, his research interests include Gide, Sartre (he is co-editor of Sartre Studies International), Camus, existentialism, the interactions between literature, philosophy, theology and belief in twentieth-century literature and culture, and applied linguistics.

Since the time of Adam Smith, scholars have tried to understand the role moral sentiments play in modern life, an issue that became especially urgent during and after the 2008 global financial crisis. Previous explanations have ranged from the idea that modern society is built on moral values to the notion that modernization results in moral decay. The essays in this interdisciplinary volume use the example of Dutch society and a wealth of empirical data to propose a novel theory about the ambivalent relation between contemporary life and human nature. In the process, the contributors argue for the need to reject simplistic explanations and reinvent civil society.
