The Oxford Handbook of Hobbes consists of twenty-six original chapters by a group of distinguished philosophers, political theorists, historians, and literary scholars from North America and Europe. All the contributors have made substantial contributions to Hobbes scholarship, some over the course of decades. The book is divided into five parts: Logic and Natural Philosophy; Human Nature and Moral Philosophy; Political Philosophy; Religion; and History, Poetry, and Paradox. The goal of each chapter is to advance the understanding of Hobbes’s thought. The discussion in many of the chapters overlaps with discussions in others, and these overlapping discussions provide multiple perspectives on the topic. Because the authors come from several different traditions and have divergent interpretations of Hobbes, the varied perspectives help to illuminate Hobbes’s thought even when they are at odds. Several of the articles interrogate Hobbes’s texts with completely new questions, and others bring to the fore topics that have not been known or appropriately appreciated.

Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) was a pioneer in demography, economics and social science more generally whose ideas prompted a new 'Malthusian' way of thinking about population and the poor. On the occasion of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his birth, New Perspectives on Malthus offers an up-to-date collection of interdisciplinary essays from leading Malthus experts who reassess his work. Part one looks at Malthus's achievements in historical context, addressing not only perennial questions such as his attitude to the Poor Laws, but also new topics including his response to environmental themes and his use of information about the New World. Part two then looks at the complex reception of his ideas by writers, scientists, politicians and philanthropists from the period of his own lifetime to the present day, from Charles Darwin and H. G. Wells to David Attenborough, Al Gore and Amartya Sen.

Edited and introduced by Robert Arp, Revisiting Aquinas’ Proofs for the Existence of God is a collection of new papers written by scholars focusing on the famous Five Proofs or Ways (Quinque Viae) for the existence of God put forward by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) near the beginning of his unfinished tome, Summa Theologica. It is not an exaggeration to say that not only is Aquinas’ Summa a landmark text in the history of Western philosophy and Christianity, but also that the Five Proofs discussed therein—namely, the arguments that conclude to the Unmoved Mover, Uncaused Cause, Necessary Being, Superlative Being, and Intelligent Director—are as compelling today as they were in the 13th Century. Written in a debate format with different scholars arguing for and against each Proof, the papers in the book consist of arguments utilizing various combinations of contemporary science and philosophical ideas to bolster the positions. The result is a revisiting of Aquinas’ Proofs that is relevant, stimulating, enlightening, and refreshing.

The book is a systematic study of the issue of self-individuation in the scholastic debate on principles of individuation (principia individuationis). The point of departure is a general formulation of the problem of individuation acceptable for all the participants of the scholastic debate: a principle of individuation of x is what makes x individual (in various possible senses of ‘making something individual’). The book argues against a prima facie plausible view that everything that is individual is individual by itself and not by anything distinct from it (Strong Self-Individuation Thesis). The keynote topic of the book is a detailed analysis of the two competing ways of rejecting the Strong Self-Individuation Thesis: the Scotistic and the Thomistic one. The book defends the latter one, discussing a number of issues concerning substantial and accidental forms, essences, properties, instantiation, the Thomistic notion of materia signata, Frege’s Begriff-Gegenstand distinction, and Geach’s form-function analogy developed in his writings on Aquinas. In the context of both the scholastic and contemporary metaphysics, the book offers a framework for dealing with issues of individuality and defends a Thomistic theory of individuation.

The book examines contemporary urban challenges and opportunities within the context of the traditional Malthusian theory. The book reorients the classic Malthusian debate on population and food by focusing on global urbanisation and its consequences for peoples’ access to basic means of subsistence. Case studies from both developing and developed countries provide a comprehensive overview of the issues related to availability of food and water in an urban context. The book suggests that the concern for human survival is still relevant and can be exacerbated by rapid urbanisation, and that the negative impacts of urban processes require an increased attention of the international community as we enter the new Sustainable Development Goals era.
