Abstract

Comic strips originated in around 1897 in the form of colorful Sunday supplements in major American newspapers. They were the first illustrated mass medium to reach tens of millions of readers a day and soon ranked first in the entertainment industry. Just how innovative and experimental the early comic strip pioneers were and that their works were on a par with the artistic avant-garde of the period went without notice for a long time. Beginning in 1905, Winsor McCay prefigured Surrealism, just as George Herriman established aspects of Absurd Theater in Krazy Kat (starting in 1913). Cliff Sterrett's scenarios from the late twenties recall Expressionist silent films, while Frank King tested the real-time narrative with Gasoline Alley. Not to forget Lyonel Feininger, who in 1906/07 tread the path of artistic independence with two comic strips. Exhibition: Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, Germany (17.06-18.09.2016).

Abstract

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of the most important and influential representatives of Danish furniture design. In more than thirty years, he created a wealth of quality furniture, many pieces of which are sold as design classics to this day, for example his Spanish Chair. Influenced by traditional craftsmanship, he was also often inspired by Shaker furniture. He noted down all of his ideas immediately—whether on matchboxes, napkins, or used envelopes. This monograph examines Mogensen’s interesting approach and presents his most well known and most popular pieces of furniture. Workshop drawings, sketches, and photographs of his furniture as well as pictures from his everyday life permit fascinating insight into the world of the Danish designer, whose furniture is not only more than attractive but also one thing in particular: functional.

Abstract

Today's urban environments face ever-increasing flows of human movement, natural disasters, and iterative economic crises. In response, city planning has developed innovative, hybrid forms that go beyond conventional ways of planning. Integrating practices of other disciplines, planning has become increasingly intricate and at the same time dependent on the cross fertilization of data, ideas, and actions across economies, societies, and geographies. This richly illustrated book of edited essays aims at introducing new approaches towards the planning of cities across the world, including Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. Covering demographically, politically, culturally, and socially diverse regions, it not only examines the use of conventional planning tools, but also explores more experimental and cross-disciplinary approaches of urban planning.
