This book is the first all-encompassing exploration of the role of demons in philosophical and scientific thought experiments. In Part I, the author explains the importance of thought experiments in science and philosophy. Part II considers Laplace’s Demon, whose claim is that the world is completely deterministic. Part III introduces Maxwell’s Demon, who - by contrast - experiences a world that is probabilistic and indeterministic. Part IV explores Nietzsche’s thesis of the cyclic and eternal recurrence of events. In each case a number of philosophical consequences regarding determinism and indeterminism, the arrows of time, the nature of the mind and free will are said to follow from the Demons’s worldviews. The book investigates what these Demons - and others - can and cannot tell us about our world. .

In den Wirren der Revolution von 1848 hat der wankende preußische König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Halt an einem Menschen gefunden, der ihn über sieben Jahre in allen innen- und außenpolitischen Fragen beriet und lenkte: Carl Wilhelm Saegert, Leiter der Taubstummenanstalt in Berlin und seit 1853 Inspektor des preußischen Taubstummenwesens. Als sich die Verhältnisse in Berlin nach der Revolution konsolidierten, war es für Saegert unmöglich, wegen seiner fehlenden Ausbildung und seiner bürgerlichen Herkunft in der Führungshierarchie anerkannt zu werden. Der König verließ sich aber weiterhin nahezu blindlings auf ihn, und Saegert musste die undankbare Rolle des geheimen Beraters spielen, der nur durch die Bediententür Zugang zum König fand. Die Edition bringt eine Auswahl der politisch relevanten Teile der Korrespondenz für die Jahre 1848 bis 1856. Die Korrespondenz wird ergänzt durch das ungekürzte Tagebuch Saegerts für die Revolutionsmonate März bis November 1848.

The molecular causes of many hematologic cancers remain unclear. The use of candidate gene and genome-wide discovery studies in the last several years have led to the identification of recurrent mutations and amplifications/deletions in a spectrum of hematologic malignancies. In addition, several of these newly identified genetic abnormalities have been shown to have prognostic importance in the clinical context. Recently, a number of molecular markers have been identified in entities of the subgroup myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms, atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), and in chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL), belonging to the category of myeloproliferative neoplasms. Distinguishing these three entities from one another is not always straightforward as they share several clinical and morphological features. Therefore the association of mutations can be helpful in refining the classification and diagnostic criteria of aCML, CMML and CNL. In the current perspective, we focus on the analysis of mutation hotspots in the colony-stimulating factor 3 receptor (CSF3R) gene, the SET-binding protein 1 (SETBP1) gene and the additional sex combs like 1 (ASXL1) gene. The first part is a review of the literature, the second part is a presentation of the results of our own retrospective evaluation.
