Justice et Miséricorde : deux modes de l'agir humain qui entrent en tension en chaque individu et dans la vie sociale. Aucune époque n'échappe à ce débat que l'Occident médiéval affronta au prisme de la révélation chrétienne et de la pensée aristotélicienne sur l'autonomie du pouvoir politique. En résulta une véritable mise en scène du face à face entre les deux vertus, le "Procès de Paradis", qui s'imposa depuis saint Anselme et fit l'objet d'une vulgarisation efficace par des oeuvres théoriques et didactiques, des images et même des jeux théâtraux. De son côté, le monarque qui, si l'on en juge par l'exemple français abordé ici, a fait de la justice l'une des voies de son affirmation, tout en s'emparant des attributs divins, tenta, lui aussi, de concilier les deux vertus, en faisant triompher sa miséricorde - sa grâce - sur la "rigueur de Justice", distinguée la bonne Justice. Au fil de ces études, le lecteur découvrira aussi quelles applications connut cette réflexion. Comment Pilate devint-il juge du Christ, pour finir à son tour jugé ? Y a-t-il eu place pour la Miséricorde dans les jugements d'Eglise, ceux du pape Innocent III ou ceux de l'Inquisition ? Comment se conçoit, entre ces deux pôles, l'autorité paternelle de l'abbé bénédictin ? En quoi ces deux vertus sont-elles compatibles avec la société de cour qui se met en place ? Et que faire quand la société du royaume est déchirée par la guerre civile : en venir à la voie de l'oubli, préconise le chancelier Jean Gerson. Des analyses, il ressort que, contrairement à une approche antagoniste, Justice et Miséricorde ne sauraient être mobilisées l'une sans l'autre : pas de vraie Justice sans Miséricorde ; mais pas de Miséricorde sans le passage premier de la Justice, dit le prince, sans le repentir du pécheur, dit le théologien.Sommaire

The Historical Uncanny explores how certain memories become inscribed into the heritage of a country or region while others are suppressed or forgotten. In response to the erasure of historical memories that discomfit a public's self-understanding, this book proposes the historical uncanny as that which resists reification precisely because it cannot be assimilated to dominant discourses of commemoration. Focusing on the problems of representation and reception, the book explores memorials for two marginalized aspects of Holocaust: the Nazi euthanasia program directed against the mentally ill and disabled and the Fascist persecution of Slovenes, Croats, and Jews in and around Trieste. Reading these memorials together with literary and artistic texts, Knittel redefines "sites of memory" as assemblages of cultural artifacts and discourses that accumulate over time; they emerge as a physical and a cultural space that is continually redefined, rewritten, and re-presented. In bringing perspectives from disability studies and postcolonialism to the question of memory, Knittel unsettles our understanding of the Holocaust and its place in the culture of contemporary Europe.--Provided by publisher.
