The halophiles are a large unexplored reservoir of biodiversity and are a potential source for industry, agriculture and environment. The highlights include the distribution of the halophiles, their adaptation in different stress conditions, and mining of their unique antimicrobial and enzymatic potential. These poly extremophiles are excellent source of enzymes and metabolites possessing inherent ability to function in extreme conditions viz., high salt, alkaline pH and facilitating catalysis for biotechnological application in food processing, industrial bioconversion and bioremediation. En als spaarders, want banken geven leningen aan projectontwikkelaars. Dat geeft burgers het ethische recht om het eigenaarschap van hernieuwbare energie op te eisen. Dus hebben wij met zijn allen nu de keuze. Ofwel ondergaan we die energietransitie passief. Of the various possibilities for generating bioenergy, the most attractive is the microbial production of biohydrogen, which has recently gained significant recognition worldwide, due to its high efficiency and eco-friendly nature. Further, the book highlights factors that can make these bioprocesses more economical, especially the cost of the feed. The anaerobic digestion (AD) process is more advantageous in comparison to aerobic processes for stabilizing biowastes and producing biofuels (hydrogen, biodiesel, 1,3-propanediol, methane, electricity), biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates, cellulose, exopolysaccharides) and bioactive molecules (such as enzymes, volatile fatty acids, sugars, toxins, etc.) for biotechnological and medical applications. The scope of biodiversity science is vast. The conservation of the rich biological wealth of our planet earth, sustainable use of biodiversity resources and their wiser management become crucial and challenging. On-going global changes exert their effect on biodiversity, bio-resources and their use patterns for sustainable development as to conserve them for generations to come. The lianas or the woody climbers form one of the fascinating groups of forest plant diversity, yet remain relatively under-researched, as compared to trees. They occur in temperate, sub-tropical and tropical forests, but particularly diverse in tropical environments, and their density is exceedingly high in dry tropics. Lianas have both positive and negative contribution in forest ecology, particularly the liana load on trees reduce tree growth and enhance tree mortality. Lianas also play important positive roles in forest functioning, contribute substantially to forest aboveground biomass and render several ecosystem services (rewarding leaf, flower and fruit resources ) to various faunal communities, and provide several goods of economic importance utilized by humans (from ropes, fruits to medicine). That being the importance of lianas in forest ecosystem, it calls for greater attention in sustainable resource use and wiser management of biodiversity and conservation for ecosystem well-being and human welfare. This book covers chapters on original articles and reviews from regional to global level contributions from various parts of the world - from North America, South America, Africa, Europe, China, South & Southeast Asia and Australia. This study presents authentic data compiled from field experiments and investigations, and provides a point of reference for any future changes associated with anthropogenic activity in semiarid ecosystems. Three years of continuous and rigorous empirical research on biodiversity (from phytoplankton to higher plants and from zooplankton to higher animals – all flora and fauna) in India’s semiarid region have culminated in this work. Though there are many studies available on issues related to biodiversity, the majority cover either specific groups of plants or groups of animals; with the exception of this book, studies that include all flora and fauna including the phyto- and zooplanktons in a given ecosystem are not readily available. Further, the book focuses on an extremely important topic, firstly because semiarid landscapes are highly vulnerable to climate change, and secondly because other developmental activities will be undertaken in the region in an effort to meet its energy requirements. As such, the results of the current study will provide a standard protocol for subsequent monitoring and mapping of biodiversity for conservation and management. The book explores, quantifies and surveys plant and animal species from aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, assessing and quantitatively analyzing the diversity indices of different vegetation strata. Further, it investigates the conservation status of each species (flora and fauna) in keeping with IUCN categories. The study also examines landscape dynamics using RS and GIS for vegetation analysis, and discusses traditional ecological knowledge related to the use, conservation and management of biodiversity. As such, it offers a unique and valuable resource not only for researchers from the environmental/ecological sciences but also for conservationists and policymakers.
