For some time now, school buildings have represented an important field in architecture, and there is an enduring interest in the challenges this design task presents. This publication explains in eleven chapters the central parameters for this architectural typology: The role of the school in the community or neighborhood, questions of sustainability, flexible spaces for learning, the role of furniture, participation in the design process, learning outside the classroom, landscape design, opportunities and challenges of special schools, and the role of new pedagogical concepts. Each theme is thoroughly investigated and illustrated with numerous buildings presenting model solutions for specific problems or aspects. Seit langer Zeit stellen Schulbauten ein großes Aufgabengebiet für die Architektur dar und es gibt ein nachhaltiges Interesse an dieser Bauaufgabe. Diese Publikation erläutert in elf Kapiteln zentrale Parameter für diesen Bautyp: die Rolle der Schule für Gemeinde oder Stadtviertel, Fragen der Nachhaltigkeit, flexible Räume zum Lernen, geeignete Möblierung, Partizipationsprozesse im Entwurf, Lernen außerhalb des Klassenzimmers, Außenraumgestaltung, Chancen und Anforderungen der inklusiven Beschulung, die Rolle neuer pädagogischer Konzepte. Jedes Thema wird ausführlich beleuchtet und mit zahlreichen gebauten Beispielen illustriert. Bei diesen geht es nicht um eine komplette Gebäudedokumentation, sondern um die Darstellung einer vorbildlichen Lösung für den jeweiligen Aspekt. Neben internationalen Beispielen werden ebenso wegweisende Projekte aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum dokumentiert, darunter die Carl-Bolle-Grundschule in Berlin (Die Baupiloten), der Postfossile "Ecowoodbox" Kindergarten in Hannover (Despang Architekten) oder das Dänische Gymnasium A. P. Møller-Skolen in Schleswig (Arkitektfirmaet C. F. Møller).

Naar aanleiding van de expositie ‘Willy Van Der Meeren: From Static to Dynamic’ verscheen de publicatie Barakken !. Het boek handelt over de schoolpaviljoenen die de architect in z’n leven heeft ontworpen en bevat naast een essay een fotoreportage van de hand van Bert Van Hoogenbemt. Zowel het zetten van de tekst als de prepress nam ik voor mijn rekening. Een leuke extra is de poster die bij de publicatie inbegrepen zit. Het collage-karakter van deze staat in contrast met de vormgeving van het boek, wat dan weer een fraaie symbiotische relatie oplevert.

Sponsored by the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE On May 20, 2013, the third violent tornado in 14 years tore through Moore, Oklahoma, creating a path of destruction through dense residential areas and damaging several critical facilities. Nearly 1,100 single-family homes were leveled, and 24 people died. Moore, Oklahoma, Tornado of 2013: Performance of Schools and Critical Facilities presents the observations, findings, and recommendations of a team of structural engineers and construction specialists who assessed the structural damage to nonresidential buildings. The team..all of whom had extensive experience in the design and construction of buildings to resist high-wind events and in the assessment of tornado damage..investigated the tornado..s effect on schools, a medical center, and buildings supported by long-span structural systems. They found that the most common structural failures related to masonry and steel framing. Topics include: a history of significant tornado events in Moore, Oklahoma; results of damage assessments and a summary of observations for a medical center, five schools, a bowling alley, and a strip mall; a survey of building codes and relevant standards used in Moore; and conclusions with recommendations. An appendix discusses the Enhanced Fujita scale and presents estimates for several locations in Moore. The damage assessments and, more importantly, the recommendations for strengthening new and existing critical facilities will be of interest to structural engineers, architects, building owners, local officials, and code developers working to reduce the damage caused by high-wind events.
