« Pour comprendre ce que peut être l'avenir, il me faut raconter à grands traits l'histoire du passé. On verra qu'il est traversé par des invariants et qu'il existe comme une structure de l'Histoire permettant de prévoir l'organisation des décennies à venir.» (Jacques Attali). L'exposition « Une brève histoire de l'avenir » tente, en observant le passé avec nos yeux d'aujourd'hui, de saisir les enjeux du futur, en se fondant sur la création artistique du passé comme de notre présent. Inspirée de l'ouvrage de Jacques Attali, paru en 2006, elle n'a pas cherché à l'illustrer. Elle en compose plutôt une interprétation, à la fois fidèle et libre. Le récit qu'elle déroule est subjectif, par force - il aurait été vain de vouloir donner place à tous les événements historiques et artistiques de l'humanité-, comme par choix - les œuvres choisies l'ont été pour leur beauté, leur force, singulières. Ce récit n'offre pas une approche temporelle linéaire. Il espère dessiner une déambulation heureuse et rythmée au sein des espaces, et invite ainsi à une traversée du temps, que les visiteurs peuvent parcourir librement. Les rapports entre l'individu et la société, les échanges - sereins et dramatiques, prospères et délétères - entre civilisations, l'aspiration vers un monde nouveau, la lente conquête de la liberté - toujours menacée et toujours reconquise -, la nécessaire et fragile transmission des savoirs en constituent autant de scansions.

The nine papers in this volume examine the historical experience of particular populations in Western Europe and North America in a search for the processes that change fertility patterns. The contributors' findings enable them to reevaluate some of the conflicting hypotheses that have been advanced for these changes. The authors stress the effects on fertility of changing mortality. Several theoretical discussions emphasize the importance both of the turnover in adult positions due to mortality and of the highly variable life expectancy of children. The empirical analyses consistently reveal strong associations between levels of fertility and mortality. On the other hand, some essays question whether variations in opportunities to marry acted as quite the regulator that Malthus and many after him have thought.
