Marlène Benquet a mené pendant trois ans une enquête sur une des principales entreprises françaises de grande distribution : d'abord caissière, elle a ensuite fait un stage au siège du groupe et un autre au sein de l'organisation syndicale majoritaire. Elle révèle dans ce livre stupéfiant les « dessous » de la grande distribution. L'identité des fondateurs (« des épiciers ») a été bouleversée par l'arrivée de nouveaux actionnaires financiers : le management par la promotion a largement disparu, et l'ensemble des salariés accepte mal ce qu'ils vivent comme une insécurité grandissante. Dès lors, pourquoi acceptent-ils d'« encaisser » ces réorganisations fragilisantes ? « Je voulais savoir ce que cela faisait d'être caissière pour comprendre pourquoi elles ne se révoltaient pas ou, en tout cas, moins que dans d'autres secteurs professionnels. » Au sein du siège, le cloisonnement est de règle : impossible de se déplacer dans d'autres services sans une bonne raison. Quant à l'organisation syndicale majoritaire, comment a-t-elle réussi à s'implanter ? Comment contribue-t-elle à la paix sociale ? Ni l'« adhésion » ni la répression ne suffisent à expliquer pourquoi les salariés s'investissent dans leur travail. Plus proches du jeu de go que des échecs, les stratégies patronales neutralisent les salariés mais ne les soumettent pas.

This book describes the Sustainable High Quality Healthcare (SustHealth) project, which had the goal of developing an original multidisciplinary evaluation tool that can be applied to assess and improve hospitals’ overall sustainability. The comprehensive nature of the appraisal offered by this tool exceeds the scope of most current rating systems, which typically permit a thorough evaluation of relevant environmental factors when designing a new building but fail to consider social and economic impacts of the design phase or the performance of the hospital’s operational structure in these fields. The multidisciplinary evaluation system was developed, from its very inception through to its testing, by following a scientific experimental method in which a global perspective was constantly maintained, as opposed to a focus only on specific technical issues. Application of the SustHealth rating tool to a currently functioning hospital, or one under design, will identify weaknesses and guide users to potential low-cost short-term solutions and longer-term strategies for improvement.

The book assembles the latest research on new design techniques in water supplies using desalinated seawater. The authors examine the diverse issues related to the intakes and outfalls of these facilities. They clarify how and why these key components of the facilities impact the cost of operation and subsequently the cost of water supplied to the consumers. The book consists of contributed articles from a number of experts in the field who presented their findings at the “Desalination Intakes and Outfalls” workshop held at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia in October, 2013.
