Abstract

This guide to dermatological treatments provides concise yet comprehensive, up-to-date overviews of treatment guidelines and pearls for a plethora of skin diseases. It is divided into three main sections that address the many different skin diseases, the drugs available for dermatological treatments, and the various methods applied in dermatology, including fillers, botulinum toxin, lasers, dermoscopy, cryosurgery, and electrosurgery. Each skin disease-focused chapter describes current treatments while also providing a brief synopsis of etiology and clinical presentation. Treatment indications and contraindications, modes of action, and dosages are clearly identified. This third edition of the European Handbook of Dermatological Treatments has been extensively revised to reflect the advances of the past decade, including biologic agents for psoriasis, also used as promising off-label treatments in other skin diseases, targeted agents for malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and new treatment modalities for rosacea, acne, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria, to name but a few. The successful easy-to-use format is retained in this new edition, which is enriched with clinical photos that will make reading a pleasurable as well as a learning experience.

Abstract

You could read every textbook available on hair growth and disorders, and still not be able to treat hair loss effectively. In every art, there are many techniques, but few principles. The only way to achieve success is to have a firm foundation of principles to build upon, and the right attitude about how to achieve your goals. This book offers a detailed guide that goes beyond the technical aspects of trichology and evidence based medicine, providing specialists and primary care physicians experienced in the basic management of hair loss with the additional know-how they need to master the ultimate challenge of difficult hair loss patients. First, the prerequisites for successful management of hair loss are reviewed – basically, making a diagnosis and understanding the patient and his or her problem. Then, guidelines on the management of difficult dermatologic conditions and of psychopathological disorders associated with hair loss are provided. Lastly, important aspects of follow-up are covered–specifically the problems of adverse effects, patient non-compliance, and their management–before concluding with exemplary case studies of successful treatment of alopecia and related conditions.

Abstract

Clinical Dermatology Trials 101 provides dermatologists with a handbook that allows them to become familiar with all aspects of clinical trials. Everything from obtaining the necessary tools and equipment, complying with local, federal, and international guidelines and regulations, and hiring and training staff for the safe and up-to-date conduct of dermatology clinical trials is covered. Written by leading experts in the field, Clinical Dermatology Trials 101 is the only clinical trial how-to available for dermatologists. With skin disease affecting nearly seventy percent of the population over a lifetime, and the rate of development of new drugs and devices for dermatologic use increasing at an exponential rate, there is a tremendous need for training and developing dermatology clinical research facilities to expedite the translation of basic and applied research, from bench to bedside. This is useful for practicing dermatologists, academic dermatologists, dermatology residents, clinical research fellows, dermatology fellows, research scientists, industry dermatologists, and medical students.

Abstract

This book serves as a useful clinical guide on integrative dermatology for dermatologists, internists, family practitioners, pediatricians, and anyone else charged with the care of the skin. The case-based format distinguishes this work from a reference-style textbook, allowing readers to relate the presented cases to their own patients. Integrative dermatology is a relatively newly-defined field but is steadily increasing in popularity. Clinical Cases in Integrative Dermatology provides insight for clinicians and patients in handling the skin, with each chapter serving as a springboard for further pursuit and more extensive training. It will enable those new to the field to begin to develop a literacy and competence, while the more experienced learner will find new ways to sharpen their diagnostic and treatment skills.

Abstract

Hair health is a core benefit of products produced for consumers by the cosmetic industry, and more than 70% of women claim to want healthy hair. However, there is very little clarity in the industry as to the meaning of healthy hair in a consumer context and the technical factors that control what the consumer perceives as hair health. Providing updated information on how to prevent and restore hair damage, Healthy Hair characterizes the clinical, physical, and chemical properties of healthy hair. Factors that control a woman’s perception of healthy hair are described, and how these factors link to the fundamental biology of the hair fiber are explained, as well as insults to hair, such as brushing, coloring, and UV exposure. The influences of different products on hair health are discussed, and methods used to measure healthy hair at the molecular, single-fiber, and consumer levels are described. Hundreds of high quality color pictures illustrate the most important clinical, dermoscopic, and microscopic characteristics of both healthy and unhealthy hair. .

Abstract

This engaging new text teaches students, residents, and practitioners of all ages how to use insights from both pathologists and dermatologists to improve their comprehension of skin disorders. It is meant to bridge the gap between dermatology and dermapathology and explores the questions that practitioners have that fall between the two subjects. What is a dermatologist to do with a pathology report that has a histological rather than a clinical diagnosis? What is to be done with old names of disorders that some clinicians still use? Why do some disorders have many names, and which is better and why? These and dozens of other questions are answered in Practical Skin Pathology, the only book of its kind to address both the clinical education of each disease as well as the pathology findings. Authored by a leader in clinical dermatology, dermatopathology, and skin immunology, Practical Skin Pathology is written for dermatologists, dermatology residents, and dermatopathologists. Addressing such questions as whether to accept a differential diagnosis from a dermatopathologist rather than a specific diagnosis and when, to how to help a pathologists give a dermatologist the best possible interpretation of a biopsy, this quick reference includes color illustrations, images, and tables to better assist the physician in answering these common questions and concerns.

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis has been called “the itch that rashes”, and this book reveals what causes the “itch”. It presents completely new and unique findings in eczema: sweat ducts that become occluded with staphylococcal biofilms trigger the innate immune system with TLR2 receptor activity and this leads to production of the “itching” and inflammation in this disease. The Etiology ofAtopic Dermatitis details new concepts that bacterial biofilms occlude sweat ducts, trigger the innate immune system, and produce the lesions in atopic dermatitis. The author discusses the findings in terms of microbiology, pathology, immunology, genetics, physiology, treatment, diseases where eczema is considered a secondary component, and diseases not previously thought to be eczema, and followed by an epilogue where eczema and psoriasis are compared. Both these diseases are caused by bacteria, but neither one can be considered an infection. As such, this book is for all who take care of patients with atopic dermatitis, including dermatologists, pediatricians, family practice doctors, allergists and pathologists. It will also be interesting for those involved in research in microbiology, physiology, immunology, and genetics.
