Abstract

Sixty is the new forty, we're constantly told. Or is it that seventy is the new fifty? Either way, there's nothing middle-of-the-road about middle age. From coping with bodies that are 'heading south' to rampant ageism in the workplace, this time in our lives, in the words of Bette Davies, 'is no place for sissies'. From the irrepressible voice behind the much-loved Guardian column 'The Vintage Years' comes a clarion call for any woman who neither wants to be told constantly to look younger, nor is ready to join the 'cardigan and slippers brigade'. From family, finances and work to cosmetics

Abstract

Throughout history, the image of "wisdom" is exclusively portrayed by men: God, Socrates, Confucius, Merlin, the aging college professor. Where are their female counterparts? The wisdom of older women is indisputable. Having lived decades raising children, caring for husbands, creating "nests" from which progeny fly out of to be productive members of society, and often being forced to observe more than participate in the events around them, older women have unique insights that help future generations not only to survive but also to thrive. New York Times-bestselling author of Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, Dr. Lois Frankel, now honors and gives voice to the often marginalized and "invisible" older women in our society. From Los Angeles, California, to Shanghai, China, women over age seventy share wisdoms and stories that are heartwarming and hilarious, insightful and witty, and philosophical and practical. "When life gives you lemons," says Jo-Ann Mercurio, born 1941, "add vodka." Beautifully photographed and illustrated, Ageless Women, Timeless Wisdom is a precious record of our women's reflections and takeaways on lives well-lived that is sure to be passed from grandmother to daughter to granddaughter.

Abstract

"Women in Late Life explores the thorny issues related to gender and aging, including prevailing but problematic cultural expectations, body image, ageism, the experience of chronic illness, threats to Social Security, and the very possibility of a secure retirement while challenging a long-term care system that disadvantages women. Author Martha Holstein blends personal narrative and interviews with critique and proposals aimed at resisting damaging inequities resulting from being simultaneously old and a woman."--Back cover.

Abstract

When she started working with the aged more than forty years ago, Ann Burack-Weiss began storing the knowledge and skills she thought would help when she got old herself. It was not until she hit her mid-seventies that she realized she had packed sneakers to climb Mount Everest, not anticipating the crevices and chasms that constitute the rocky terrain of old age. The professional gerontological and social work literature offered little help, so she turned to the late-life works of beloved women authors who had bravely climbed the mountain and sent back news from the summit. Maya Angelou, Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, Joan Didion, Marguerite Duras, M. F. K. Fisher, Doris Lessing, Mary Oliver, Adrienne Rich, May Sarton, and Florida Scott-Maxwell were among the many guides she turned to for inspiration. In The Lioness in Winter, Burack-Weiss blends an analysis of key writings from these and other famed women authors with her own wisdom to create an essential companion for older women and those who care for them. She fearlessly examines issues such as living with loss, finding comfort and joy in unexpected places, and facing disability and death. This book is filled with powerful passages from women who turned their experiences of aging into art, and Burack-Weiss ties their words to her own struggles and epiphanies, framing their collective observations with key insights from social work practice.

Abstract

In lively, accessible prose, this book expands the reach and depth of age studies. A review of age studies methods in theory, literature, and practice leads readers to see how their own intersectional identities shape their beliefs about age, aging, and old age. This study asks readers to interrogate the "texts" of menopause, self-help books on aging, and foundational age studies works. In addition to the study of these nonfiction texts, the poetry and prose of Doris Lessing, Lucille Clifton, and Louise Erdrich serve as vehicles for exploring how age relations work, including how they invoke readers into kinships of reciprocal care as othermothers, otherdaughters, and otherelders. The literary chapters examine how gifted storytellers provide enactments, portrayals, and metaphorical uses of age to create transformative potential.

Abstract

These are paradoxical times to be an older woman . As individual older women take the stage as role models in the arts and the public sphere, female elders as a group are marginalized as dependent, declining, and unimportant. Women and Aging surveys the evolving sociopolitical landscape in an era still struggling with gender and age discrimination. This insightful volume recasts familiar concepts such as social roles, appearance, health, sexuality, and transition through the related lenses of empowerment/restraint and quality of life/well-being for a deeper understanding of the disparities that exist both with men and within their own gender. Two especially relevant questions emerge from this framework: how women over 60 are contributing to the current climate of societal change, and how these positive developments can improve the lives of older women as a whole. Featured topics analyze the wider implications of older women's experiences as family members, sensual and sexual beings, drivers of economies, and members of a diverse population worldwide:  Older women, power, and the body. Older women, economic power, and consumerism. The impact of multiple roles on older women: Strain or enrichment? Older women, leadership, and encore careers. Sexuality in older women: Desirability and desire. Lesbians over 60: Newer every day. Clinical interventions to empower older women. A significant advanc e in feminist research, Women and Aging brings path-breaking perspectives to scholars in women’s studies, gerontology, psychology, sociology, social work, and human development, whether they study women who have overcome barriers or those who need support in changing the rules.
