This book exposes, and fills, a notable void in the educational content generally covered in modern schools of medicine. It provides an introduction to the field at large in terms of content that is relevant for each of the specialties and subspecialties of medicine; and to this end, it addresses the modern counterpart of the Hippocratic philosophy that was at the root of the genesis of modern medicine. The much-needed but still-missing introductory content for the interdisciplinary 'medical common,' provided in this book, addresses mainly the most elementary concepts and principles of medicine. Those concepts flow, hierarchically, from the essence of (health and) ill-health/illness for one and that of medicine for another, both of these critically formulated; and those principles are dictates of logic and ethics, both specific to medicine. While a modern physician is expected to be competent as a scholar in his/her particular discipline of medicine, study of this book is essential for the development of that competence -- for learning, for example, to make a tenable distinction between scientific medicine and medical science, and between knowledge-based medicine (scientific and other) and its opinion-based substitutes ('evidence-based' and other). Le titre même de cet ouvrage, Le Conflit des Facultés et autres textes sur la révolution, réalisé par les soins de Christian Ferrié, dit l'ambition de son auteur. Il s'agit de rien moins que de conférer à un texte classiquement considéré comme secondaire - à l'exception de la seconde section - le statut d'oeuvre majeure où se manifeste la cohérence d'un tout, au point que l'on puisse y voir le testament politique de Kant. A cela contribue d'une part l'édition des premières moutures de la seconde section sur le progrès historique du genre humain. C'est le cas d'un Essai sur le progrès comprenant des fragments traduits pour la première fois en français. D'autre part, une interprétation renouvelée de la première section relative au conflit entre la Faculté de théologie et celle de philosophie, selon laquelle serait en jeu la question du théologico-politique, c'est-à-dire l'émancipation du politique à l'égard de la religion, grâce à une critique radicale des différents messianismes qui font obstacle à la pratique pure d'une religion de la raison. Testament politique révolutionnaire où Kant, à suivre l'interprète, se trouverait situé entre Spinoza et l'Ecole de Francfort. En effet, dans cette mise en scène des conflits qui opposent les Facultés supérieures, du côté du pouvoir, à la philosophie, du côté de l'émancipation, se constitue une théorie critique de l'idéologie dominante. A partir de l'enthousiasme que suscite l'événement révolutionnaire chez les spectateurs qui y perçoivent le signe d'un progrès en mieux, Kant affirme une exigence normative à réaliser politiquement, sous la forme de la reconnaissance du droit du peuple inscrit dans une constitution républicaine. Une postface inventive fait crédit à Kant d'avoir élaboré un réformisme révolutionnaire qui, prenant appui sur un diagnostic du présent, révèle sa vision politique d'un monde à venir.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach to conceptualise interpersonal trust between patients and medical practitioners, Katja Beitat introduces a unique model to describe the dynamics of trust building and deterioration with particular relevance to incidents in health care. Empirical findings from studies in Australia and Germany, the two systems focused on in this book, broadly support and expand the proposed dynamic model of trust. This volume addresses the proper character of patient informed consent to medical treatment and clinical research. The goal is critically to explore the current individually oriented approach to informed consent which grew out of the dominant bioethics movement that arose in the United States in the 1970s. In contrast to that individually oriented approach, this volume explores the importance of family-oriented approaches to informed consent for medical treatment and clinical research. It draws on both East Asian moral resources as well as a critical response to the ways in which the practice of informed consent has developed in the United States.

This volume addresses some of the most prominent questions in contemporary bioethics and philosophy of medicine: ‘liberal’ eugenics, enhancement, the normal and the pathological, the classification of mental illness, the relation between genetics, disease and the political sphere, the experience of illness and disability, and the sense of the subject of bioethical inquiry itself. All of these issues are addressed from a “continental” perspective, drawing on a rich tradition of inquiry into these questions in the fields of phenomenology, philosophical hermeneutics, French epistemology, critical theory and post-structuralism. At the same time, the contributions engage with the Anglo-American debate, resulting in a fruitful and constructive conversation that not only shows the depth and breadth of continental perspectives in bioethics and medicine, but also opens new avenues of discussion and exploration.   For decades European philosophers have offered important insights into the relation between the practices of medicine, the concept of illness, and society more broadly understood. These interventions have generally striven to be both historically nuanced and accessible to non-experts. From Georges Canguilhem’s seminal The Normal and the Pathological, Michel Foucault’s lectures on madness, sexuality, and biopolitics, Hans Jonas’s deeply thoughtful essays on the right to die, life extension, and ethics in a technological age, Hans-Georg Gadamer’s lectures on The Enigma of Health, and more recently Jürgen Habermas’s carefully nuanced interventions on the question of liberal eugenics, these thinkers have sought to engage the wider public as much as their fellow philosophers on questions of paramount importance to current bioethical and social-political debate. The essays contained here continue this tradition of engagement and accessibility. In the best practices of European philosophy, the contributions in this volume aim to engage with and stimulate a broad spectrum of readers, not just experts. In doing so the volume offers a showcase of the richness and rigor of continental perspectives on medicine and society. .
