Abstract

This volume offers a full analysis of one of the more intriguing works by a figure who is central to our understanding of Late Antiquity and early Christianity: the translator, exegete, and controversialist Jerome (c.347-419/20AD). The neglected text of the Vita Malchi - or, to use Jerome's title, the Captive Monk - recounts the experiences of Malchus, a monk abducted by nomadic Saracens on the Eastern fringe of the fourth-century Roman Empire, in what today is the border region between southern Turkey and Syria. Most of this short, vivid, and fast-paced narrative is recounted by Malchus in the first person. The volume's introduction provides background information on the author, Jerome, and the historical and linguistic context of the Life, as well as detailed discussion of the work's style and its reception of earlier Christian and classical literature, ranging from its relationship with comedy, epic, and the ancient novel to the Apocryphal Apostolic Acts and martyr narratives. An exposition of the manuscript evidence is then followed by a new edition of the Latin text with an English translation, and a comprehensive commentary. The commentary explores the complex intertextuality of the work and provides readers with an understanding of its background, originality, and significance; it elucidates not only literary and philological questions but also points of ethnography and topography, and intellectual and social history.

Abstract

Abstract

"Crafted from George Hoshida's diary and memoir, as well as letters faithfully exchanged with his wife Tamae, Taken from the Paradise Isle is an intimate account of the anger, resignation, philosophy, optimism, and love with which the Hoshida family endured their separation and incarceration during World War II. George and Tamae Hoshida and their children were an American family of Japanese ancestry who lived in Hawai'i. In 1942, George was arrested as a 'potentially dangerous alien' and interned in a series of camps over the next two years. Meanwhile, forced to leave her handicapped eldest daughter behind in a nursing home in Hawai'i, Tamae and three daughters, including a newborn, were incarcerated at the Jerome Relocation Center in Arkansas. George and Tamae regularly exchanged letters during this time, and George maintained a diary including personal thoughts, watercolors, and sketches. In Taken from the Paradise Isle these sources are bolstered by extensive archival documents and editor Heidi Kim's historical contextualization, providing a new and important perspective on the tragedy of the incarceration as it affected Japanese American families in Hawai'i. This personal narrative of the Japanese American experience adds to the growing testimony of memoirs and oral histories that illuminate the emotional, psychological, physical, and economic toll suffered by Nikkei as the result of the violation of their civil rights during World War II"--

Abstract

Sara Confalonieri presents an overview of Cardano’s mathematical treatises and, in particular, discusses the writings that deal with cubic equations. The author gives an insight into the latest of Cardano’s algebraic works, the De Regula Aliza (1570), which displays the attempts to overcome the difficulties entailed by the casus irreducibilis. Notably some of Cardano's strategies in this treatise are thoroughly analyzed. Far from offering an ultimate account of De Regula Aliza, by one of the most outstanding scholars of the 16th century, the present work is a first step towards a better understanding. Contents Inter-Dependencies Between the Families of Cubic Equations in the Ars Magna  Ars Magna, Chapters XI-XXIII and the Casus Irreducibilis Getting Acquainted with the De Regula Aliza The Method of the Splittings in Aliza, Chapter I Target Groups  Academics, researcher and students in the fields of mathematics, the history of mathematics, and epistemology. The Author Sara Confalonieri graduated in Philosophy at the Università degli Studi di Milano, in Mathematics at the Université Paris 6, and in Epistemology at the Université Paris 7, where she also obtained the PhD degree in history of mathematics on cubic equations during the Renaissance. At present, she takes part in a project on history of the didactic of mathematics in the 18th century at the Bergische Universität in Wuppertal as a post-doctoral researcher.
