Die vorliegenden Beiträge sind zum überwiegenden Teil aus der Arbeit für das Freie Deutsche Hochstift/Frankfurter Goethe-Museum hervorgegangen. Ohne daß Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stets im Zentrum der Untersuchung stünde, bleiben sie doch alle auf ihn bezogen. Das Spektrum reicht von der Darlegung wesentlicher Voraussetzungen, die zur klassischen Blütezeit führten, über das Umfeld des Goetheschen Jugendwerks bis zur Epoche des »West-östlichen Divan«. Ihr Ziel ist es, ausgehend von der philologischen Rekonstruktion und Interpretation zu größeren geistesgeschichtlichen, motivgeschichtlichen oder lebensgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen vorzudringen. Most of the essays in this collection are the fruit of work done for the Goethe Museum Frankfurt/Main (Freies Deutsches Hochstift). While Goethe is not always in the forefront of the studies, they ultimately all revolve around him. The spectrum ranges from a discussion of some essential preconditions for the flowering of German classicism and the environment in which Goethe's youthful works took shape to the epoch of the "West-Östlicher Divan". Common to all is the aim of proceeding from philological interpretation and reconstruction to broader perspectives on the history of ideas, the history of literary motifs and Goethe's biography.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a dominant figure in European literature and intellectual life, was the creator of a new and influential visual culture. This volume investigates a new science of perception through an exploration of his autobiographical works, novels and writings on optics. The psychoanalytic approach taken in this study focuses on central acts of perception and the role of vision in Goethe as key to the formation of identity. By addressing the impact of visuality on the act of writing, new interpretations of his most important works emerge through analysis of subject formation in the autobiographies, The Italian Journey and Poetry and Truth. Further, the relationship between the self and the gaze plays a central role in the semi-autobiographical works, The Elective Affinities, Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, as well as Color Theory. In exploring the question of identity and identification within a Lacanian framework, The Eye and the Gaze offers an innovative approach to biography, autobiography, and narrative.

Die erste grundlegende Darstellung der wechselvollen Geschichte von Goethes Wohnhaus und des Goethe-Nationalmuseums in Weimar. Goethes Wohnhaus in Weimar gilt bis heute als ein deutsches »Nationalsymbol«. Seine aus den Quellen erarbeitete Geschichte zeigt, wie sich im Goethehaus und seinen Erweiterungsgebäuden die deutsche Geschichte des 19. wie des 20.
