Justinian I. (527-565) prägte als Kaiser, der sich als Gottes Stellvertreter auf Erden inszenierte, mit seiner Religionspolitik die Spätantike nachhaltig. Dadurch soll ein Beitrag zur Justinian-Forschung geleistet werden, indem erstmals umfassend die Rolle und Funktion des heterogenen östlichen Mönchtums für Justinians Religionspolitik in den Blick genommen wird.
