Galileis denkende Hand stellt eine grundlegende Überarbeitung des im Jahr 2007 erschienenen Werkes Galilei, der Künstler dar. Bereinigt um eine fehlerhafte Zuschreibung, entfaltet es auf stark erweiterter Grundlage das künstlerische Element von Galileis Forscherleben. Nach einer Rekonstruktion von Galileis künstlerischer Ausbildung erschließt es mit seinem künstlerischen Freundeskreis auch seinen zeitkritischen Stilbegriff und seine Kunsttheorie. Die Untersuchung von Galileis Darstellungs- und Analysemittel bei der Erkundung des Mondes, der Sonne, der Jupitermonde und der Fixsterne führt zu zahlreichen neuen Ergebnissen; so erweisen sich die berühmtem Florentiner Mondzeichnungen nicht als Modelle, sondern als Korrekturen der Mondradierungen im Sternenboten von 1610. Schließlich revidiert das Buch die herkömmliche Deutung von Galileis Diktum, dass die Philosophie im geometrischen Buch der Natur ihr Ziel finde. Galilei zufolge besteht die Natur nicht nur aus geometrischer Präzision, sondern auch aus dem Überfluss des Wirren und Wuchernden. Da die Kunst beide Elemente im Blick hat, ist sie für Galilei das Modell aller Philosophie. Galileo’s Thinking Hand represents a fundamental revision of the earlier work Galileo, the Artist published in 2007. The sections incorrectly identifying a forgery as the work of Galileo have been corrected. The work sheds light on the artistic aspects of Galileo’s research life, drawing on a greatly expanded documentational basis. New insights reveal Galileo’s working methods as he explored the moon, sun, moons of Jupiter, and the fixed stars.

Few legal events loom as large in early modern history as the trial of Galileo. Frequently cast as a heroic scientist martyred to religion or as a scapegoat of papal politics, Galileo undoubtedly stood at a watershed moment in the political maneuvering of a powerful church. But to fully understand how and why Galileo came to be condemned by the papal courts—and what role he played in his own downfall—it is necessary to examine the trial within the context of inquisitorial law.With this final installment in his magisterial trilogy on the seventeenth-century Roman Inquisition, Thomas F. Mayer has provided the first comprehensive study of the legal proceedings against Galileo. By the time of the trial, the Roman Inquisition had become an extensive corporatized body with direct authority over local courts and decades of documented jurisprudence.
