Eine Neubewertung des Goethe-Schiller-Verhältnisses auf der Grundlage des Briefwechsels und weiterer literarischer Quellen.Als Goethe in seiner autobiographischen Erzählung vom »Glücklichen Ereignis« (1817) über sein Verhältnis zu Schiller nachdachte, lag die erste persönliche Begegnung der beiden Dichter schon fast 30 Jahre zurück. Dennoch ist es diese Erzählung mit der darin geprägten Metapher der beiden »Geistesantipoden«, die das literaturgeschichtliche Bild der Vorgeschichte und des Beginns der Freundschaft am stärksten geprägt hat: Goethes polare Deutung seines Verhältnisses zu Schiller ist bis heute in der wissenschaftlichen Rezeption wirksam geblieben. Demgegenüber bringt Gerrit Brüning die Fülle der Briefe und literarischen Texte zum Sprechen, die zeitlich unmittelbar von der Vorgeschichte, dem Beginn der Freundschaft sowie von den wichtigsten Stationen der dichterischen Zusammenarbeit Goethes und Schillers zeugen. Er entwirft ein Bild, das der autobiographischen Erzählung und der ihr verpflichteten Literaturgeschichtsschreibung entschieden kontrastiert. Behandelt werden die Beziehung Goethes und Schillers in den Jahren nach 1788, der Briefwechsel der Jahre 1794-1798 sowie, in quellenkritischer Absicht, die Erzählung »Glückliches Ereignis«.
