Definitions of space are as diverse as the disciplines in which it plays a fundamental role; from science and philosophy to art and architecture, each field's perception of space is often simplified or reduced. This consequently denies access to 'new spaces', whose definitions and perspectives, strategies and impacts on human perception are rarely considered in any cohesive manner. This is where the Aedes Network Campus Berlin (ANCB) programme 'No Space Without Traits' came in: particularly through artistic approaches, it aimed to open doors into spatial worlds that until now have remained closed. The symposium 'PERCEPTION in Architecture. HERE and NOW' was part of this programme and invited critical and comprehensive contributions by academics, artists, architects, designers and curators. These presentations are brought together in this volume to reflect upon new spatial concepts and thus access 'new spaces' of perception in architecture. The symposium stimulated a discourse focused on spaces as a collective entity, notions of spatial truth, the multiplicity of experience, and Wahrnehmnungsapparate, as well as physical, visual, acoustic and virtual manifestations of space in relation to social, cultural, historical and political forces.

For over 25 years, Martin Rauch has been at the forefront of research and development in all aspects of rammed earthed construction. As proper design with earth can only come from truly understanding the material, he would now like to share his experience and knowledge of this construction material in a design manual. The publication goes beyond projects to focus on structural elements, such as the design and layout of floors, walls, ceilings and openings, which are clearly explained with detailed project information from structures previously realised by Martin Rauch. Various examples help to illustrate how to overcome structural engineering difficulties in earth construction and the design possibilities that result from these solutions. "Il aura fallu attendre l'expressionnisme abstrait des peintres américains pour voir réapparaître la coulure dans les images. Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Morris Louis, en libérant le geste pictural des entraves dictées par les règles du passé, ont donné libre cours, sous des formes à chaque fois diverses et singulières, aux écoulements de peinture. Jackson Pollock en a même fait un motif spécifique avec lequel son style a par la suite été décrit. Le fameux dripping n'est rien d'autre que les "écoulements" de peinture industrielle dégouttant sur la toile disposée à même le sol. Mais auparavant, dans la peinture classique, la coulure, bien que plus discrète, a également joué un rôle de tout premier ordre. Certains peintres de renom (Rogier van der Weyden, Lucas Cranach, Michel-Ange, Tintoret, Caravage) ont su tirer parti de la force dynamique et expressive de ces coulures de peinture afin de révéler le caractère unique de leur invention. Les coulures disent la rapidité d'exécution incomparable de ces artistes et leur ingenium inimitable.
