The food security of a nation is largely dependent on its ecological foundation. In India, competition for water, land, human, and financial resources, and the suitability of the existing institutional system in ensuring food security require the attention of both policy makers and planners. Food crops have to compete for water and various other needs with commercial crops. Water, the core requirement for food production, is becoming increasingly scarce in many parts of India. Land is also crucial in food production, especially with regards to soil fertility. However, lands traditionally used

This book explores the national security implications of the Arab Gulf states reliance on desalination plants, and their related infrastructure. It provides the first systematic and comprehensive discussion of current and future threats to the supply of freshwater from a desalination plant, including actual and virtual attacks by terrorists, mechanical failure, contamination, sabotage by aggrieved workers, attacks relating to regional conflicts, as well as their vulnerability to natural disasters. It also provides a detailed analysis of the effects of a potential disruption to the water supply, and proposes possible measures, both political and technological, that can be used to increase resilience to these threats. Arab Water Security is a valuable reference for researchers and graduate students, as well as for policy makers and professionals, interested in water security, natural resources, and environmental terrorism.

This book builds on authors’ perspective on food security gathered from their global experience of working with farmers in their fields. They are standing back and looking at the global food security situation as a whole through squinted eyes and are concerned about vulnerability and fragility of food value chains. Our species has developed incredible technology, but our heads are in the sand when it comes down to the fundamentals of our survival as a species. The destruction through over exploitation of natural environments, pollution of all kinds, the ensuing impacts of climate change are putting our ability to garner food and potable water from our environment. The issue of food security and the consequences of its absence are becoming more pressing. In many parts of the world, insufficient food is grown to provide adequate nutrition for everyone, every day. Food is lost to pests before harvest and after harvest. Too much is wasted between field and mouth. New paradigms are needed; old ones need to be discarded. The human population is set to number 10 billion by 2052, and to keep on increasing. Can that number of people be fed and if not – what are the constraints? The 10 chapters in this book discuss the current situations, explore options and consider solutions. In a rapidly urbanized and cyber-technology dependent modern world, the global food security challenge is to provide safe and nutritious food to all in the face of population growth and the preservation of natural ecosystems. The response to this challenge must include improving the efficiency of the food chain with technological and market innovation that enable billions of smallholder farmers access the value chain and scale up income generating activities. Long term vision has been missing from our food security planning and inter-generational perspective. Efficient agricultural production that takes advantage of innovative technologies underpinned by end-to-end value-chain development from promoting the right inputs to encouraging mass adoption of balanced and nutritive food intake will be the real progress towards food security for all.

The issues that need to be addressed in combating hunger and achieving food security are highlighted in this book by a great Indian geneticist. It also discusses the major causes of chronic and hidden hunger and emphasises the need to redesign the farming system based on nutritional considerations. The role of an effective monsoon management programme to maximise its benefits is examined. There are chapters that analyse the importance of biodiversity conservation and enhancement and farmer skill development. Important issues to increase agricultural production including investment by financial institutions in agriculture and rural development, women's role in agriculture and youth employment in rural livelihoods are discussed in great detail in the text. The book concludes that there must be synergy between scientific knowledge, political will and farmers' active participation to achieve the goal of overcoming chronic and hidden hunger in the populations of developing countries.

As population estimates for 2050 reach over 9 billion, issues of food security and nutrition have been dominating academic and policy debates. A total of 805 million people are undernourished worldwide and malnutrition affects nearly every country on the planet. Despite impressive productivity increases, there is growing evidence that conventional agricultural strategies fall short of eliminating global hunger, as well as having long-term ecological consequences. Forests can play an important role in complementing agricultural production to address the Sustainable Development Goals on zero hunger. Forests and trees can be managed to provide better and more nutritionally-balanced diets, greater control over food inputs – particularly during lean seasons and periods of vulnerability (especially for marginalised groups) – and deliver ecosystem services for crop production. However forests are undergoing a rapid process of degradation, a complex process that governments are struggling to reverse. This volume provides important evidence and insights about the potential of forests to reducing global hunger and malnutrition, exploring the different roles of landscapes, and the governance approaches that are required for the equitable delivery of these benefits. Forests and Food is essential reading for researchers, students, NGOs and government departments responsible for agriculture, forestry, food security and poverty alleviation around the globe.
