La ville d'Angers est encore aujourd'hui profondément marquée par son passé médiéval. L'implantation successive des différentes églises à partir du Ve siècle a déterminé et dessiné tout au long du haut Moyen Age les traits principaux qui structurent et caractérisent le coeur de la ville actuelle. Le pouvoir politique n'est pas étranger à cette histoire qui voit se multiplier les lieux saints. Ce livre explore le premier Moyen Age angevin dans une approche institutionnelle et religieuse. Pour cela, toutes les catégories de sources ont été mobilisées et croisées. Les textes narratifs et hagiographiques ont permis des recoupements et des rapprochements avec les résultats des fouilles archéologiques menées depuis plus d'une vingtaine d'années. Les éléments repérés ont pu être complétés par l'analyse des sources normatives, diplomatiques, poétiques et liturgiques. Ainsi, la situation d'Angers au sein du royaume a pu être reconsidérée. Il en ressort que l'histoire angevine a été marquée de manière décisive par l'un de ses évêques, saint Aubin. Peu après sa mort, au milieu du VIe siècle, son corps est transporté dans une basilique construite sur l'ordre du roi Childebert Ier. L'attachement des rois et des princes à ce saint et au lieu où il repose va demeurer à travers les siècles. L'église Saint-Aubin devient un pôle religieux et politique majeur à Angers, et au-delà, dans l'Ouest du royaume franc. Cet éclairage nouveau permet de redécouvrir les différentes étapes de l'histoire d'Angers et de l'Anjou jusqu'au début du XIe siècle.

Il volume è frutto delle ricerche che da oltre dieci anni Maria Pia Alberzoni conduce sulle origini degli Ordini mendicanti nelle loro componenti maschili e femminili. In queste indagini sono sottoposte a un serrato esame e messe nuovamente a fuoco le complesse relazioni intercorse tra i ‘fondatori’ – Francesco e Chiara – e la Chiesa romana. Il momento dell’approvazione papale per le rispettive regole e forme di vita costituisce infatti un osservatorio privilegiato per considerare come l’emergere di nuovi carismi nella Chiesa abbia incontrato favore o resistenza, talora giungendo, come nel caso dei ‘fondatori’ qui ricordati, a esprimere significative novità istituzionali: l’Ordine dei frati Minori e quello di S. Damiano (dal 1263 denominato Ordine di s. Chiara). Così la peculiarità del carisma francescano è collocata entro un ampio contesto storico-culturale che consente di coglierne a fondo l’originalità. I principali interlocutori di queste novitates furono certamente i papi Innocenzo III e Onorio III, ma nell’agiografia francescana emerge prepotentemente la figura del cardinale Ugo d’Ostia, dal 1227 al 1241 papa Gregorio IX. Costui non solo lasciò un duraturo segno nell’organizzazione della vita regolare e indicò significativi sviluppi della spiritualità, ma fu anche colui che favorì la conservazione della memoria di Francesco sia promuovendone a meno di due anni dalla morte la rapida canonizzazione sia prendendo iniziative volte a regolamentare e a meglio definire la struttura dell’Ordine dei frati Minori.

Bei Hitze, Hagel, Kälte oder Trockenheit, als Mittel zur Brandbekämpfung und Abwendung von Wassergefahren hielt man Hostien für allgegenwärtig und allmächtig. Man konnte sie aber auch zu Liebespulver zerstampfen oder damit verwunschene Jungfrauen erlösen. Dass geweihte Hostien unter der Haut getragen gegen jedwede Verwundung schützten, zeigte ihren Nutzen bei Rittern oder Kriegsknechten. Wildschützen glaubten an sie, denn Hostien im Kolbenschaft erhöhten die Treffsicherheit der Büchse; wenn man nicht den Leib Christi gleich mit in das Blei gab, um Freikugeln daraus zu gießen.
