On This Day (translated from the Armenian "Yaysmawurk") is a compilation of stories about venerable Christians saints and martyrs from days gone by. The collection was part of the great and varied Armenian liturgical tradition from the turn of the first millennium. The first Yaysmawurk was translated from an existing Greek liturgical collection (the Synaxarion, "where the lives are all collected"). Armenian Christians adopted traditional stories and added their own, ultimately creating multiple versions of the Synaxarion as the culmination of a long and steady development of what is today called the cult of the saints.

The twenty Poems of Theodore Metochites (ca. 1270-1332) constitute a unique corpus of approximately 10.000 verses composed in the traditional Homeric hexameter. Metochites did not use the most common iambic verse, but chose to commemorate his deeds and immortalize his thoughts and experiences in the heroic Homeric verse. At the same time he took advantage of the poetic works of Gregory of Nazianzus, who exercised a considerable influence upon his language and his general attitude towards his fellow men and his social environment. The poems of Metochites, both in their entirety and each one of them separately, are a curious mixture of various genres (autobiography, ekphrasis, letter, hagiographical praise), which testify to their author's wide range of interests and his bold attempt to renovate the traditional patterns of Byzantine poetry. Some poems are addressed to his friends (e.g. Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos or Leo Vardales), but most of them are addressed to the author himself. Metochites was quite pessimistic about the situation of the state and of his own affairs, and gave expression to his inner feelings of frustration and sadness in a rather unrestrained manner. Most of these poems had been published in the past, but their editions are either difficult to obtain or inadequate. In the introduction the editor sketches a balanced portrait of Metochites as a poet, underlining both his merits and his limitations.

"This book analyzes the hagiographic traditions of six missionary saints in the Syriac heritage: Thomas, Addai, Mari, Simeon of Beth Arsham, Jacob Baradaeus, and Ahoudemmeh. Saint-Laurent studies a body of legends about missionaries' voyages in the Syrian Orient and illustrates their shared symbols and motifs. Revealing how these texts encapsulate the concerns of the communities that wrote them, she draws attention to the role of hagiography as a malleable genre that was well suited for the idealized presentation of the beginnings of Christian communities. Hagiographers, through their reworking of missionary themes, assert autonomy, orthodoxy, and apostolicity for their individual civic and monastic communities, posturing themselves in relationship to the rulers of their empire and other competing forms of Christianity. She argues that missionary hagiography is an important and neglected source for understanding the development of the East and West Syriac ecclesiastical bodies: the Syrian Orthodox Church and the Church of the East. Many of these Syriac-speaking churches remain today in the Middle East and India, with diaspora communities in Europe and North America. While Saint-Laurent focuses on late antiquity in Missionary Stories and the Formation of the Syriac Churches, her work opens up further study of the role of saints and stories as symbolic links between ancient and modern traditions"--Provided by publisher
