The industrial revolution, first phase, consisted of iron, steel, textile and railway development, all powered by steam; it was complete by the mid-nineteenth century. The second phase comprising electricity, automotive and chemical advances, plastics and processed food occupied the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries. The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History is a three-volume work of over 1,000 entries on the rise and spread of the Industrial Revolution across the world. Entries comprise accessible but scholarly explorations of topics from the "aerospace industry" to "zaibatsu." Contributor articles not only address topics of technology and technical innovation but emphasize the individual human and social experience of industrialization. Entries include generous selections of biographical figures and human communities, with articles on entrepreneurs, working men and women, families, and organizations. They also cover legal developments, disasters, and the environmental impact of the Industrial Revolution. Each entry also includes cross-references and a brief list of suggested readings to alert readers to more detailed information.The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History includes over 300 illustrations, as well as artfully selected, extended quotations from key primary sources, from Thomas Malthus’ “Essay on the Principal of Population” to Arthur Young’s look at Birmingham, England in 1791.

Le célèbre pamphlet du physicien et philosophe William Molyneux, né et mort à Dublin (1656-1698), The Case of Ireland being bound by acts of Parliament to England Stated (1698) ou Discours sur la sujétion de l'Irlande aux lois du Parlement d'Angleterre, est, par sa vision du contexte historique, un apport précieux à la connaissance de l'époque et aux relations entre l'Irlande et l'Angleterre. Évoquant les affaires les plus inquiétantes qui portent atteinte à l'autonomie de l'Irlande, l'auteur conteste au Parlement d'Angleterre le droit de légiférer pour l'Irlande au motif que l'Irlande est un royaume séparé, qu'elle a son propre Parlement et n'est pas représentée au Parlement d'Angleterre. Il veut restaurer les droits du Parlement d'Irlande, tirant argument des accords entre les chefs irlandais et Henri II et faisant référence à la publication en 1692 par Anthony Dopping du Modus tenendi parliamenta in Hibernia. La théorie selon laquelle l'Irlande était sujette du roi d'Angleterre et non du Parlement n'était pas facile à concilier avec la situation nouvelle créée par la Révolution de 1688-1689 qui établissait le Parlement, et non le roi, comme l'autorité suprême en Angleterre. L'ouvrage fit sensation et fut considéré comme la première revendication de l'indépendance irlandaise.
