Abstract

Niche Tactics aligns architecture's relationship with site with its ecological analogue: the relationship between an organism and its environment. Bracketed between texts on giraffe morphology, ecological perception, ugliness, and hopeful monsters, architectural case studies investigate historical moments when relationships between architecture and site were productively intertwined, from the anomalous city designs of Francesco de Marchi in the sixteenth century to Le Corbusier's near eradication of context in his Plan Voisin in the twentieth century to the more recent contextualist movements. Extensively illustrated with 140 drawings and photographs, Niche Tactics considers how attention to site might create a generative language for architecture today.

Abstract

This book examines the application of the principle of layering in architecture, its mechanics, possible application and meaning. Layering is widely used in the discussions of the 20th and 21st centuries architecture but rarely defined or examined. Layering bridges the tectonics of structure and skin, offers a system for the creation of different architectural spaces over time and functions as a design principle without hierarchy. Three types of layering are identified: a chronological sedimentation of planes materializing changes over time (temporal layering), the additive sequence of spaces (spatial layering), and the stratification of individual planes (material layering). Like a palimpsest, historic cities frequently reveal temporal layering and aspects of change over time, a condition familiar to archaeologists who study layer upon layer of remnants of civilisation, including architectural remains and urban organization. In historic cities, one can read at least the most recent layers to determine a physical chronology of the city's history; contemporary architects add strata of the 21st century. Cities are composed of several layers, offering a complex understanding of time in which a view of the present includes also the perception of the past. At a building scale, layers can be part of the spatial composition, multiple elements of walls, the skin, the structure or decorative and narrative elements. Just as the position and order of geological strata contain information related to their age, formation, and origin, the position and form of architectural layers come with information about their function, intellectual scope, and provenance. The possible elements of such an architectural strategy include materials, light, water, and color as well as associations, memories, and analogies embedded in the layers or in the voids between them. Material layering is based on a perceived separation of spatial enclosures into floor, wall, and ceiling or roof elements and combinations thereof. Individual elements may consist of multiple planes fulfilling a series of specific functions. The architectural enclosure can represent the physical wrapper of a building and might transport the structures narrative, tectonic information, cultural expression, the architects design intent, and other topics that might be embedded.

Abstract

In his wide-ranging study of architecture and cultural evolution, Chris Abel argues that, despite progress in sustainable development and design, resistance to changing personal and social identities shaped by a technology-based and energy-hungry culture is impeding efforts to avert drastic climate change. The book traces the roots of that culture to the coevolution of Homo sapiens and technology, from the first use of tools as artificial extensions of the human body, to the motorised cities spreading around the world, whose uncontrolled effects are changing the planet itself. Advancing a new concept of the meme, called the 'technical meme', as the primary agent of cognitive extension and technical embodiment, Abel proposes a theory of the 'extended self' encompassing material and spatial as well as psychological and social elements, which now reaches out into the virtual world of cyberspace. Drawing upon research from philosophy, psychology and the neurosciences, the book presents a new approach to environmental and cultural studies. Written in a clear and engaging manner, it addresses a broad readership searching for insights into the origins of the environmental crisis.

Abstract

The book examines how photos are used to digitally reproduce, inform about, and archive buildings. Moreover, it is dedicated to the concept of the use of a building being the visual content of architectural photography, and also questions how the photograph influences the constructed reality. Photography and architecture have a long and intense relationship ; and both are accompanied by debates about how, as disciplines, they hover somewhere between service and art form. The book examines how photos are used to digitally reproduce, inform about, and archive buildings. Moreover, it is dedicated to the concept of the use of a building being the visual content of architectural photography, and also questions how the photograph influences the constructed reality. What is the status of architectural photography today? For one, photographs provide mass media exposure for the buildings; however, the photographers' own attitude, interests, and style result in highly individual images of the built reality. They tell their own stories of the building, decide whether to capture it occupied or not, dynamic or naturalistic, with or without context, as a new building or in use. How does this photographic perspective affect the way in which buildings and their architects are perceived? Many architects collaborate for long periods of time with specific photographers. How much do photographs influence the actual design? Which photos serve to publicize the building, which lend a new perspective? In today's flood of images, where there is almost no difference between photographs and renderings, this publication refreshingly brings architectural photography to the fore while allowing a peek behind the scenes. In eight richly illustrated chapters, the relationship between architecture and photography is subjected to a changing view. The different positions enter into a fascinating dialog. Insights and visual beauty go hand in hand.

Abstract

The curators of architecture exhibitions are often concerned with the problem of how to present objects that ultimately cannot be brought into the exhibition space. Such shows are often difficult for lay audiences to interpret; little focus is placed on communication. However, there are also architecture exhibits that concentrate on communicating an experience. They make it possible to build an intense relationship between the audience and the content on display. This publication focuses on the question of how space can be orchestrated at an exhibition to negotiate an architectural idea. Bringing together pieces by theoreticians, curators and practitioners involved in exhibition production, Displayed Spaces contributes toward the analysis of contemporary architecture exhibitions.
