Als een duiveltje uit een doosje verscheen Sven Gatz vorige zomer opnieuw op het politieke toneel. De teruggekeerde politicus met een visie op en een hart voor kunst, toneel, dans en muziek, kwam meteen in zwaar weer terecht: de Vlaamse regering zette de tering naar de nering en ook het departement Cultuur bleef niet gespaard. Was Sven Gatz dan toch een beeldenstormer met een verborgen agenda? BEKENTENISSEN VAN EEN CULTUURBARBAAR is Gatz' antwoord op die vraag. Het is een relaas van zijn eerste jaar als minister van Cultuur en biedt tegelijk een blik op de toekomst. Sven Gatz neemt de lezer mee naar Vlaamse cultuurtempels en parochiezalen en gaat op bezoek bij kunstliefhebbers, podiumwerkers en straatartiesten die het buitenland ons benijdt. In acht thematische hoofdstukken geeft hij zijn inzichten prijs over de relatie tussen onze Vlaamse cultuur en de samenleving, het individu, het buitenland, geld, onze taal, de stad, de diversiteit en de digitale maatschappij, telkens becommentarieerd door een geheimzinnige Grijze Man die er het zijne van denkt.

In his Master project Sven Herrmann for the first time carried out fundamental investigations into the development of polyoxometalate based ionic liquids (POM-ILs). The POM-ILs were obtained by charge balancing inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) anions with sterically demanding tetraalkylammonium or tetraalkylphosphonium cations. By functionalization of lacunary Keggin clusters with 3d-transition metals and charge balancing with tetraalkylammonium cations of differing chain length, a model system for the correlation of the molecular structure with macroscopic materials properties was obtained. In a systematic approach the syntheses via self-aggregation is presented. Analytic methods comprise UV-Vis, FTIR, NMR, EPR and Mößbauer spectroscopy. Britain and France were surprised at having to convince the US of the need to intervene in Libya in 2011. The French intervention in Mali in 2013 confirmed the picture; Washington will support European action, but only if and when Europe takes the initiative. Just as the focus of American strategy is shifting to Asia and the Pacific, vital interests in the European neighbourhood require resolute action. Autonomy is being forced upon Europe, but it is an autonomy constrained by a lack of means as, following the financial crisis, defence budgets across the EU member states are slashed. The ramifications of the Arab Spring and the crisis in Ukraine pose challenges of an enormous scale for the EU and its members. "Peace Without Money, War Without Americans" is the double challenge that European strategy-makers face. What can be expected from strategy at a European level? Can Europe cope?

Bruggeling P.C. Popp koestert grootse plannen: een atlas van België die alle kadastergegevens tot in de kleinste details openbaar maakt. 38 jaar lang, tussen 1841 en 1879, laat hij alle vastgoedgegevens per dorp en stad optekenen in 41.000 bladzijden en meer dan 2300 kaartbladen. Iedereen die zich eigenaar kan noemen van gronden, bossen, molens, kastelen, huizen, stallen, etc. wordt in deze atlas 'genoteerd'. Elk goed wordt minutieus in overzichtelijke tabellen beschreven en accuraat op fraaie kaarten ingetekend.0Vandaag de dag is dit monumentale werk een van de waardevolste historische bronnen voor lokale geschiedenis.
