Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

"What does the landscape architect actually do as a design?" The authors investigate this seemingly simple question. What resources are available for designing open spaces? What part is played by conditions deriving from nature? How are locations and spaces created in the open air, how are paths routed and boundaries set, how are hard and soft materials used? Drawing on practical and theoretical experience, this introduction, often used as a textbook, reveals the central components of design and the intellectual paths followed in the design process."The book is not so much for reading but for doing. It plays with shapes, imagining how people feel in these shapes and seeing how shapes create a different experience of landscape. Vegetation can make the relief of a hill clearer, less clear, indistinct or hidden. The authors show this by sketches illustrating the text ... As an example of the way Loidl and Bernard set their readers thinking for themselves, I "e what they regard as good design: 'The paradox of a good design solution: more uniformity needs more variety.'Food for thought. Or read Open(ing) Spaces." (Martin Woestenburg in 'scape, 2006)

Abstract

In the book 'Wasteland. A History', Vittoria Di Palma takes on the “anti-picturesque,” offering an account of landscapes that have traditionally drawn fear and contempt.Di Palma argues that a convergence of beliefs, technologies, institutions, and individuals in 18th-century England resulted in the formulation of cultural attitudes that continue to shape the ways we evaluate landscape today. Staking claims on the aesthetics of disgust, she addresses how emotional response has been central to the development of ideas about nature, beauty, and sublimity. With striking illustrations reaching back to the 1600s - husbandry manuals, radical pamphlets, gardening treatises, maps, and landscape paintings - 'Wasteland. A History' spans the fields of landscape studies, art and architectural history, geography, history, and the history of science and technology. In stirring prose, Di Palma tackles our conceptions of such hostile territories as swamps, mountains, and forests, arguing that they are united not by any essential physical characteristics but by the aversive reactions they inspire.

Abstract

The Brussels Biennale of Modern Architecture focuses on the less known yet enriching Brussels architectural patrimony of the era 1918-1972. This first edition, entitled Living in modern isms, will display the wide range of isms that were used to design Brussels dwellings. From the beginning of the 20th century Brussels was a leading city when it came to new architectural developments. In the interwar period, ornamental simplicity and new ground plans ran parallel to the introduction of new techniques such as lifts and sanitary facilities. Duplexes, horizontal windows, flat roofs and terraces were common ingredients in modernist architecture. High-rise blocks were the new and visible symbol of post- war modernism when architects started to use prefabricated materials. An abundance of optimistic colours completed their new way of designing. Exhibition: Several buildings in Brussels, Belgium (2014).

Abstract

Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) remains one of the most important landscape architects in the history of the field. His distinctive and widely acclaimed work has been featured and referenced in numerous sources, yet few of Burle Marx's own words have been published. This collection of a dozen of Burle Marx's lectures, most of which have never before been available in English, fills that void. Delivered on international speaking tours, they address topics such as Concepts in Landscape Composition, Gardens and Ecology, and The Problem of Garden Lighting. Their publication sheds light on Burle Marx's distinctive ethic and aesthetic of landscape, as "the real art in living."The lectures paint a picture of Burle Marx not just as a gardener, artist, and botanist, but as a landscape architect whose ambition was to bring radical change to cities and society.
