Heilige Schriften einmal nicht unter inhaltlichen Aspekten, sondern als materielle Gegenstände in den Fokus zu rücken, ist das Anliegen dieses Bandes. Wie alle von Menschen geschaffenen Gegenstände existieren auch Heilige Schriften nicht losgelöst von räumlicher Präsenz und menschlichem Handeln, das sich an und mit ihnen vollzieht und ihnen dabei Bedeutungen zuschreibt. In welchem Zusammenhang stehen Gestaltungsweisen dieser Objekte und ihre Verwendung, worin unterscheiden sich Heilige Schriften von anderen Objekten und ist es immer nur der Inhalt, der Heilige Schriften zu etwas Heiligem macht? In einer interdisziplinären Diskussion, auf deren Vorträgen und Ergebnissen die Artikel dieses Bandes basieren, ließen sich differenzierte Antworten unter Kontrastierung verschiedener Kulturen und Religionen finden: vom Alten Orient (Ägypten, Mesopotamien) über das Judentum und christliche europäische Kunstgeschichte bis hin zum Alten China und dem modernen Bali. Der Einbezug der bislang vernachlässigten, aber für ein umfassendes Verständnis essentiellen materiellen Seite und der Praxis bietet neue Impulse für die Diskussion um die Bedeutung und Funktionen des Phänomens ,Heilige Schriften'.

The twelfth-century Anglo-Norman verse 'Life of King Edward the Confessor' is presented here in modern English for the first time, and with a full introduction and notes. Its author, an anonymous Nun of Barking Abbey, offers a many-faceted and absorbing portrait of the celebrated king and saint, together with legendary material found in no other version of this hagiographic narrative. There is also a wealth of detail about Edward's times as well as about the twelfth-century context in which the Nun was writing, making the poem of great interest to historians as well as to literary scholars. This is among the earliest texts in French known to be by a woman, and so will be of great value to scholars investigating medieval female authorship. Long neglected, perhaps because mistakenly thought to be a mere translation of Aelred of Rievaulx's 'Vita' in Latin, it proves to be remarkably independent of its main source and raises questions about the freedom and originality of medieval 'transposition' or translation. -- Publisher's description. With Faithful Translators Jaime Goodrich offers the first in-depth examination of women's devotional translations and of religious translations in general within early modern England. Placing female translators such as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, alongside their male counterparts, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Philip Sidney, Goodrich argues that both male and female translators constructed authorial poses that allowed their works to serve four distinct cultural functions: creating privacy, spreading propaganda, providing counsel, and representing religious groups. Ultimately, Faithful Translators calls for a reconsideration of the apparent simplicity of "faithful" translations and aims to reconfigure perceptions of early modern authorship, translation, and women writers.

Dans la dialectique invention-fidélité au modèle, le mérite d’un auteur consistait à promouvoir une variante surprenante d’une histoire pourtant notoire, quoique peu répandue dans l’espace où il l’implante précisément et l’adapte. L’originalité consistait à rejoindre le dénouement connu par une voie inédite.À défaut de toujours pouvoir retrouver la trace des auteurs réels de certains écrits anciens, surtout de ceux dont l’œuvre s’est vue attribuer une autorité de norme collective, à défaut de savoir d’où ils venaient et quelle était l’expérience qu’ils ont vécue ou l’histoire réelle qu’ils ont mise en mots, les contributions de ce volume s’interrogent sur le rapport des auteurs de textes religieux, mythologiques ou littéraires aux valeurs qui firent autorité ou qui sont à l’origine de leur «autorité».
