Abstract

During the production of Alien, H. R. Giger kept two diaries with sketches, notes, and comments. Diary No. 7 covers the period from February 23 to June 28, 1978 ; diary No. 8 the period from August 1, 1978, to February, 1979. HR Giger worked in the Shepperton Studios near London from February to November 1978, creating the figures and sets for the film Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott. The film became an international success, earning Giger an Oscar. In the transcribed Alien Diaries, published here for the first time as a facsimile, HR Giger describes his work in the studios. He writes, sketches, and takes photographs with his Polaroid SX70. With brutal honesty, sarcasm and occasional despair, Giger describes what it is like working for the film industry and how he struggles against all odds - be it the stinginess of producers or the sluggishness of his staff - to see his designs become reality. The Alien Diaries (in German transcription with an English translation) show a little-known personal side of the artist HR Giger and offer an unusual, detailed glimpse into the making of a movie classic through the eyes of a Swiss artist. The book contains almost completely unpublished material, including drawings, Polaroids showing the monster coming to life, and several still shots from the plentiful film material that Giger took in Shepperton.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

To be truly prized and employable, textile and fashion designers have to be aware of, and knowledgeable about, a wide range of processes to enable their designs to be manufactured effectively, often thousands of miles from their design studio. This much-needed new reference is the only encyclopedic guide to manufacturing processes and materials that is truly relevant for textile and fashion designers. It is organized into five main parts: fiber and yarn technology; textile technology; construction technology; life cycle strategies; and materials appendix. This book is a complete overview of the life cycle of textile and fashion manufacturing, from the spinning of yarn to recycling. All the processes feature detailed step-by-step case studies showing the process in manufacture at a leading international supplier. The appendix features essential knowledge on over sixty natural and synthetic materials. With around 1,400 specially commissioned photographs and technical illustrations, this is the indispensable, reliable, convenient, and highly accessible practical reference for all textile and fashion designers.--

Abstract

Art and design researchers can contribute in interesting ways to engaging citizens, policy makers, private partners and other participants to participate in public space (issues). The methods of doing so are, however, underexplored. Therefore, the European Marie Curie Multi-ITN project ‘TRADERS’ (short for ‘Training Art and Design Researchers in Participation for Public Space’) researches the ways in which art and design researchers can ‘trade’ or exchange with multiple participants and disciplines in public space projects and – at the same time – trains them in doing so. In this kick-off symposium in Belgium, Hasselt, we will start a first debate around this topic in close collaboration with art centre Z33. All participating art and design researchers will be present, from 6 participating institutes, being Media, Arts and Design Faculty/LUCA School of Arts (KHLim/KULeuven), Royal College of Art/School of Architecture, Design Academy Eindhoven/Man and Public Space, University of Gothenburg/School of Design and Crafts, Chalmers University of Technology/Department of Architecture and KULeuven/Planning and Development and the Architecture and Culture Theory research units. We would like to invite you to join the lectures and the discussion.

Abstract

A multivocal critique that emphasizes the crucial role of artists in questioning and shaping the phenomenon of the exhibition. This anthology provides a multivocal critique of the exhibition of contemporary art, bringing together the writings of artists, curators, and theorists. Collectively these diverse perspectives are united by the notion that although the focus for modernist discussion was individual works of art, it is the exhibition that is the prime cultural carrier of contemporaneity. The texts encompass exhibition design and form; exhibitions that are object-based, live, or discursive; projects that no longer rely on a physical space to be visited in person; artists' responses to being curated and their reflections on the potential of acting curatorially. Set against the rise of the curator as an influential force in the contemporary art world, this volume underlines the crucial role of artists in questioning and shaping the phenomenon of the exhibition.

Abstract

Discussions of the object as a key to understanding central aspects of modern and contemporary art. Artists increasingly refer to “post-object-based” work while theorists engage with material artifacts in culture. A focus on “object-based” learning treats objects as vectors for dialogue across disciplines. Virtual imaging enables the object to be abstracted or circumvented, while immaterial forms of labor challenge materialist theories. This anthology surveys such reappraisals of what constitutes the “objectness” of production, with art as its focus. Among the topics it examines are the relation of the object to subjectivity; distinctions between objects and things; the significance of the object's transition from inert mass to tool or artifact; and the meanings of the everyday in the found object, repetition in the replicated or multiple object, loss in the absent object, and abjection in the formless or degraded object. It also explores artistic positions that are anti-object; theories of the experimental, liminal or mental object; and the role of objects in performance. The object becomes a prism through which to reread contemporary art and better understand its recent past.

Abstract

Considering art at the center of network theory, from the rise of the electronic media age in the 1960s to the present. The dawn of the electronic media age in the 1960s began a cultural shift from the modernist grid and its determination of projection and representation to the fluid structures and circuits of the network, presenting art with new challenges and possibilities. This anthology considers art at the center of network theory, from the 1960s to the present. Artists have used the “space of flows” as a basis for creating utopian scenarios, absurd yet functional propositions or holistic planetary visions. Others have explored the economies of reciprocity and the ethics of generosity, in works that address changed conditions of codependence and new sites of social negotiation. The “infra-power” of the network has been a departure point for self-organized counterculture and the creation of new types of agency. And a “poetics of connectivity” runs through a diverse range of work that addresses the social and material complexity of networks through physical structures and ambient installation, the mapping of the Internet, or the development of robots and software that take on the functions of artist or curator.
