The Anthropology of Western Religions: Ideas, Organizations, and Constituencies is a comparative survey of the world's major religious traditions as professional enterprises and, often, as social movements. Documenting the principle ideas behind Western religious traditions from an anthropological perspective, Murray J. Leaf demonstrates how these ideas have been used in building internal organizations that mobilize or fail to mobilize external support. Leaf documents a wide range of cultural and social phen

The Yearbook of International Religious Demography presents an annual snapshot of the state of religious statistics around the world. Every year large amounts of data are collected through censuses, surveys, polls, religious communities, scholars, and a host of other sources. These data are collated and analyzed by research centers and scholars around the world. Large amounts of data appear in analyzed form in the World Religion Database (Brill), aiming at a researcher’s audience. The Yearbook presents data in sets of tables and scholarly articles spanning social science, demography, history, and geography. Each issue offers findings, sources, methods, and implications surrounding international religious demography. Each year an assessment is made of new data made available since the previous issue of the yearbook.

This book is a collection of essays by a select array of international scholars, on a range of issues concerning plurality, pluralism, and other closely related concepts, which constitute the framework and guiding thread for the whole volume. The themes and subjects dealt with here address issues of the greatest concern, particularly in the delicate context of present-day Europe and of modern societies with a global scale. The volume's basis is the belief that pluralism, globality, technology, mass media, and computer networks are distinctive traits of contemporary society in all its complexity - and that, therefore, such notions provide essential conceptual tools for explaining and understanding the current age. Featured in this volume are twelve contributions by scholars from different fields of philosophy, the humanities and the social sciences. In their essays, the contributors address the complexities of the contemporary world and the challenges with which it confronts all these disciplines. In this way, they provide a philosophical analysis of phenomena, situations, and problems that are typical of this complex world. Their different approaches and disciplinary perspectives all share an open-mindedness which is characteristic of the philosophical attitude; but also take into account the results of research in different fields of the human sciences as applied to the study of contemporary society, politics and culture, as well as artistic practice and aesthetic experience. This book will be of interest for scholars in the fields of philosophy, political sciences, Spanish thought, theory of art and literature; for students in programs of cultural studies or of the different fields of the humanities; and for the general reader with an interest in philosophical reflection on the complexities of pluralism and the modern world.

Religion is alive and well all over the world, especially in times of personal, political, and social crisis. Even in Europe, long regarded the most “secular” continent, religion has taken centre stage in how people respond to the crises associated with modernity, or how they interact with the nation-state. In this book, scholars working in and on Europe offer fresh perspectives on how religion provides answers to existential crisis, how crisis increases the salience of religious identities and cultural polarization, and how religion is contributing to changes in the modern world in Europe and beyond. Cases from Poland to Pakistan and from Ireland to Zimbabwe, among others, demonstrate the complexity and ambivalence of religion’s role in the contemporary world.

Interreligious Hermeneutics and the Pursuit of Truth argues that in inter-religious dialogue, we must not dismiss truth claims-whether metaphysical, ethical, or aesthetic-as mere cultural preference or existential display. Though such claims contain the uncomfortable possibility of conflict, they can also be rationally contested, and even synthesized in the service of broader, more adequate worldviews.
