This book will be of great interest to researchers on wildlife management in Africa who must appreciate the essentially intertwined aspects of socio-cultural, socio-political and socio-economic processes, and who can find here an outstanding synthesis of the findings. FOCUS: Discordant Village Voices is a quest for a more telling narrative about what continues to happen to people and wildlife on one resource frontier. Survival depends on our relationships with human and other life around us, relationships that are fragile, unconscious and uncertain. Sustainable practices and the ideas supporting them must be worked at and worked over continuously: such practical resolutions are rarely found within textbooks, but in practical cultivations on the ground, and often appearing when least expected. The future of the rural community of the central Luangwa Valley. This area, designated as a game management area, has been subject to profound cultural and economic changes resulting from colonial and later government initiatives to conserve wildlife. A shift in focus to environmental and biodiversity conservation in the 1980s released a new web of myths, problems and contradictions, without resolving earlier dilemmas from the state-dominated eras. In this study, initiated in the 1960s and carried out over the subsequent six decades, Stuart Marks examines the interface between the Munyamadzi rural communities and the wildlife institutions imposed on their homeland. Focusing on ways of effectively brokering resource regimes, he seeks to demonstrate that local employments and assistance must effect sustainable alternatives to pre-existing and customary livelihoods. His research is supported throughout by a database of wildlife counts-an original and statistically viable record designed in conjunction with local resident hunters-which offers an independent perspective, differing from those intermittently collected by safaris and scouts.

Dogs are the world's most common and widespread carnivores and are nearly ubiquitous across the globe. The vast majority of these dogs, whether owned or un-owned, pure-bred or stray, spend a large portion of their life as unconfined, free-roaming animals, persisting at the interface of human and wildlife communities. Their numbers are particularly large throughout the developing world, where veterinary care and population control are often minimal and human populations areburgeoning. This volume brings together the world's experts to provide a comprehensive, unifying, and accessible review of

Reproductive biology is more than the development of techniques for helping with too little or too much breeding. While some of the relevant techniques are useful for individual species, technical developments have to be backed up by thorough biological understanding of the background behind the problems. This book is therefore threefold; (1) it provides a snapshot of the state of the art in terms of species-specific reproductive technologies, whether for individual animals or whole taxonomic groups; (2) it sets the reproductive problems in context and emphasizes the links between animal-based problems and the wider world, e.g. reproductive fitness and (3) it looks forward and presents realistic assessments of how effective some of the more recently developed techniques in reproductive technology might be at combating extinctions. This is a wide-ranging book that will be relevant to anyone involved in reproductive biology or in species conservation and provides provide them some useful perspectives about the real utility of current and emerging technologies. It has contributions from experts in reproduction and related fields.

This is the first comprehensive illustrated guide to the natural world of the Caribbean islands. It contains 600 vivid color images featuring 451 species of plants, birds, mammals, fish, seashells, and much more. While the guide primarily looks at the most conspicuous and widespread species among the islands, it also includes rarely seen creatures-such as the Rhinoceros Iguana and Cuban Solenodon-giving readers a special sense of the region's diverse wildlife. Each species is represented by one or more color photos or illustrations; details regarding its identification, status, and distribution; and interesting aspects of its life history or relationship to humans. In addition, an introductory section focuses on the unique characteristics of the Caribbean's fauna and flora, the threats faced by both, and some of the steps being taken to sustain the area's extraordinary natural heritage. Wildlife of the Caribbean is the essential field guide for learning about the living wonders in this area of the world. Presented here is the final and most coherent section of a sweeping classic work in environmental history, The Unending Frontier. The World Hunt focuses on the commercial hunting of wildlife and its profound global impact on the environment and the early modern world economy. Tracing the massive expansion of the European quest for animal products, The World Hunt explores the fur trade in North America and Russia, cod fishing in the North Atlantic, and whaling and sealing on the world's oceans and coastlands.
