This book provides both the conceptual basis and technological tools that are necessary to identify and solve problems related to biodiversity governance. The authors discuss intriguing evolutionary questions, which involve the sometimes surprising adaptive capacity of certain organisms to dwell in altered and/or changing environments that apparently lost most of their structure and functionality. Space and time heterogeneities are considered in order to understand the patterns of distribution and abundance of species and the various processes that mold them. The book also discusses at which level—from genes to the landscape, including individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems—men should intervene in nature in order to prevent the loss of biodiversity.

This volume focuses on new trends in monitoring biodiversity in the Asia-Pacific region, one of the most rapidly changing areas in the world. It provides reviews of the challenges in studying the spatial variability of biodiversity across various ecosystems. This book also describes newly developed concepts and methods for biodiversity observation including ubiquitous genotyping, systematic conservation, monitoring of the functions and services of ecosystems, and biodiversity informatics. These contributions will lead to establishing integrative observations and assessments of biodiversity, essential for reporting the current status and for the effective conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This work will interest biodiversity researchers not only in the Asia-Pacific region, but also across the entire globe.

This groundbreaking work offers a practical manual for implementing afforestation and reforestation programs in the arid and semi-arid tropics. The comprehensive text covers both the technical and managerial aspects of afforestation and reforestation, and includes model engineering and organizational designs. The book is intended for professionals engaged in planning, monitoring, and coordinating afforestation and reforestation programs, as well as for field supervisors responsible for implementing those programs. It will also serve as a valuable reference guide for planners and policymakers in governments and donor agencies concerned with natural resource management, watershed development, and community development. Students and teachers of forestry at universities, colleges, and professional training institutions will also find it a valuable resource. The book offers extensive content on the technology of afforestation and reforestation. It presents structured information in the form of charts, tables, figures, photographs, and model engineering designs that can be applied directly in planning new programs as well as monitoring the tasks and activities involved in carrying them out. It can be used as a field manual, a productivity enhancement tool, and a quality assurance tool for workers and managers alike. The book was conceived, designed, and written by a highly qualified author with many years of practical experience in the implementation of afforestation and reforestation projects. His background in engineering and forestry has led to a multidisciplinary systems approach that is both unique and invigorating. The book incorporates five years’ painstaking work in planning and converting carefully researched data into structured information and practical designs.

North east India is a global biodiversity hotspot but a quite understudied area. Forest loss has always been problematic in the area. Using Landsat satellite data from three periods (70s, 80s/90s and 2010s), forest loss is assessed in sample protected areas and other sites in the study area. Processing is undertaken using image processing and standard GIS tools. The landscape metrics of select sites are assessed using the widely used program Fragstats. The central discussion of the study involves the drivers of forest loss.

This global synthesis of information on impacts of wildfires and prescribed burning on insect species and assemblages brings together examples from many parts of the world, and from many different environments and production systems. It demonstrates the wide variety of insect responses to fire, and the often subtle balance between fire being a severe threat or a valuable management component. Recent increased calls for massively increased fuel reduction burning have drawn attention to details of fire regimes, and how applications of fire may be tailored for greater conservation benefit. Some of the more traditional uses of fire in forestry, grassland succession, and agroecosystems have progressively been modified for greater consideration of wellbeing of sensitive insects and other biota. Increasing understanding of insect responses to fires can indicate factors that may be considered in improved protocols for prescribed burning in the future, and for incorporating fire in management plans for threatened insect species and wider assemblages.

The book about Endemism in Vascular Plants is the first comprehensive analysis of the macroecology and geobotany of endemic vascular plants with case-studies and analyses from different regions in the world. Endemism is a pre-extinction phenomenon. Endemics are threatened with extinction. Due to international nature conservation policies and due to the perception of the public the importance of the concept of endemism is increasing. Endemism can result from different biological and environmental processes. Depending on the process conservation measures should be adapted. Endemic vascular plant taxa, in the setting of their species composition and vegetation types are important features of landscapes and indicators of the quality of relating habitats. The book is an important basis for biologists, ecologists, geographers, planners and managers of nature reserves and national parks, and people generally interested in nature conservation and biogeography of vascular plants. Furthermore, the book provides an insight into biological phenomena which are related to evolutionary, genetical, ecological processes, and landscape history under climate change and anthropogenic impacts. 21 experts from all over the world are contributors of the book. The scientists describe and analyse distribution patterns and underlying evolutionary and ecological processes of mainland regions e.g. in Middle America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia, and island regions of tropical and subtropical zones in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Basin, Indic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean as well.

This volume presents systematic treatments for the families and genera of the Malpighiales, which more recently have been recognised as a new major group of the eudicots. Apart from several herbaceous lineages (already treated in Vol. IX of this series), the order consists mainly of rainforest trees, particularly those of the understorey. Accompanied by other early eudicot lineages, this reflects the well-documented origin of the group as invaders into the conifer-, cycad- and seed fern-dominated forests of the Cretaceous which, at that time, were transformed into the tropical rainforest biome. In this volume, 24 families with 429 genera comprising over 12,000 species are treated. Many of these belong to the vast family of the Euphorbiaceae (here conceived in a broader sense), followed by the Violaceae, whereas some of the remaining families are very small and even relictual. The revised classification includes a complete inventory of the genera belonging to the families treated in this volume, along with their diagnostic features and keys for their identification. References to the latest taxonomic literature and links to many different disciplines important to modern plant systematics make the volume a valuable source of information on the manifold aspects of plant diversity.
