« Que peut bien signifier aujourd'hui le vieux clivage droite-gauche tel qu'il fonctionne depuis l'affaire Dreyfus ? Il me semble que c'est avant tout le refus de remettre cette question en chantier – et de tirer ainsi les leçons de l'histoire de notre temps – qui explique en grande partie l'impasse dramatique dans laquelle se trouvent à présent tous ceux qui se reconnaissent encore dans le projet d'une société à la fois libre, égalitaire et conviviale. Dans la mesure, en effet, où la possibilité de rassembler le peuple autour d'un programme de sortie progressive du capitalisme dépend, par définition, de l'existence préalable d'un nouveau langage commun – susceptible, à ce titre, d'être compris et accepté par tous les “gens ordinaires” –, cette question revêt forcément une importance décisive. Je vais donc essayer d'expliquer pour quelles raisons j'en suis venu à estimer que le nom de gauche – autrefois si glorieux – ne me paraît plus vraiment eu mesure, aujourd'hui, de jouer ce rôle fédérateur ni, par conséquent, de traduire efficacement l'indignation et la colère grandissantes des classes populaires devant le nouveau monde crépusculaire que les élites libérales ont décidé de mettre en place. »
