The United States has about $10.5 trillion tied up in aging school facilities. School districts throughout the country spend about $30 billion every year keeping this infrastructure going. Yet almost all of the new money we pour into school facilities reinforces an existing--and obsolete--model of schooling. In Blueprint for Tomorrow, Prakash Nair--one of the world's leading school designers--explores the hidden messages that our school facilities and classrooms convey and advocates for the "alignment" of the design of places in which we teach and learn with twenty-first-century learning goals. Blueprint for Tomorrow provides simple, affordable, and versatile ideas for adapting or redesigning school spaces to support student-centered learning. In particular, the author focuses on ways to use current spending to modify existing spaces, and explains which kinds of adaptations offer the biggest return in terms of student learning. The book is organized by area--from classrooms to cafeterias--and is richly illustrated throughout, including "before and after" features, "smart idea" sidebars, and "do now" suggestions for practical first steps. It outlines key principles for designing spaces that support today's learning needs and includes tools to help educators evaluate the educational effectiveness of their own spaces. Blueprint for Tomorrow will open educators' eyes to the ways that architecture and learning are entwined and will challenge them to rethink the ways they teach and work together.

The objective of this guide is to consider school retrofitting from a holistic point of view by developing guidelines not just in terms of energy performances or solar systems but also in terms of comfort, quality of life, environmental impact and resource consumption. This guide is mainly intended for architects and architecture students and also for principals and other school administrative authorities. Richly illustrated with both explanatory diagrams and photographs, the guide provides designers with information and resources needed to retrofit school buildings in a responsible and efficient way.

In just four years of construction a modern campus with 100,000 square meters of surface area has come into being for Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) between the new Messe Wien fairgrounds and the green Prater park. A versatile master plan by BUSarchitektur connects six buildings by internationally renowned architects. The lecture hall and department buildings by Zaha Hadid Architects, BUSarchitektur, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, CRAB studio, Estudio Carme Pinós, and NO.MAD Arquitectos are embedded in a "walk along park", which offers generous open spaces and links the campus to the city. This book presents the ambitious architecture in images and plans; users report about daily life in their new place of work and study. Also the building technologies, structural engineering, and the genesis of the new campus are described in detail. Together these different facets render a rich image of a socially and technically sustainable complex, which reflects the openness, diversity, and international character of the university.

Typically new generation learning spaces (NGLS) across the international higher education sector are being designed to support a more student-centred approach to teaching, through more active and collaborative learning opportunities, often using new technology (Keppell et al. 2012). However, the promise of NGLS appear to remain unfulfilled. This book takes a futuristic perspective on these unfulfilled promises, bringing to the fore the key elements of learning, teaching, professional development and design. The book addresses the compelling questions of the decade in an effort to help senior university managers think beyond the pedagogies of yesterday in order to maximize the use and design of physical learning spaces for the future. The book is written in four sections: 1) The future of learning spaces in Universities; 2) The future for learning and teaching in NGLS; 3) The future of professional development for teaching in NGLS; and 4) The future for design in learning environments and spaces.
