Abstract

This topical issue is based on the presentations given at the 26th National Solar Observatory (NSO) Summer Workshop held at the National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak, New Mexico, USA from 30 April to 4 May 2012. This unique forum brought together experts in different areas of solar and space physics to help in developing a full picture of the origin of solar phenomena that affect Earth’s technological systems.  The articles include theory, model, and observation research on the origin of the solar activity and its cycle, as well as a discussion on how to incorporate the research into space-weather forecasting tools.  This volume is aimed at graduate students and researchers active in solar physics and space science.  Previously published in Solar Physics, Vol. 289/2, 2014.

Abstract

Radiological Safety and Quality - Paradigms in Leadership and Innovation is a multi-disciplinary and inter-sectorial collaboration by international experts and leaders from academic institutions, radiology practices, professional organizations, regulatory authorities, UN and international agencies.  Established principles and new concepts, challenges and opportunities, and examples of leadership and innovations are discussed to raise awareness, share experience and facilitate development of facility-based or system-wide improvements in radiation safety, quality radiology, and patient care by procedure justification, optimization of protection and imaging data, and incident minimization.   The 26 chapters by 53 experts and 11 messages from international organizations and agencies convey a common theme: there is no single panacea to improve radiological safety and quality but on-going leadership, innovation, collaboration, and stakeholder participation are needed.   The team R Baranczyk, T Berris, CC Blackmore, C Borras, RK Chhem, BI Choi, K Classic, M Crick, AK Dixon, KJ Dreyer, R Duszak Jr, XY Feng, DP Frush, R George, HA Gharbi, L Glenn, A Hammou, ELM Ho, A Janssens, H Järvinen, K Kase, M Kawooya, LM Kenny, LS Lau, B Le Guen, J Le Heron, O Luxenburg, C Mandel, M Margalit, AV Moore, R Morin, KH Ng, TNB Pascual, M Rehani, DF Gutierrez, S Ros, DI Rosenthal, W Runciman, F Shannoun, PC Shrimpton, E Shelly, E Silva III, G Simeonov, CL Sistrom, B Song, DW Sung, JH Thrall, E Vano, R Vetter, JB Weilburg, P Wilcox, WT Wu, and H Zaidi.   The Editors Lawrence Lau is a radiologist from Melbourne and the founding Chairman of the International Radiology Quality Network, an organization focusing on collaborative actions to improve the quality, safe, and appropriate use of radiology for practitioners, facilities and healthcare systems. Kwan-Hoong Ng is a Professor of Medical Physics in the Department of Biomedical Imaging, and the University of Malaya Research Imaging Centre, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He has been actively involved with education, research and training in radiological safety and imaging.   Novice practitioners, experienced leaders and stakeholders in radiology, radiography, clinical medical physics, patient safety, administration, regulatory authorities, professional organizations and agencies will find this publication useful in the development and implementation of actions to improve radiation safety, quality patient care, and appropriate use of radiology.

Abstract

Set against a backdrop of the recent disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, "Hiroshima to Fukushima" examines the issue of radiation safety. The author provides important and accurate scientific information about the radioactive substances arising from nuclear power plants and weapons, including the effects of this radiation on living organisms. Currently, humankind is at a crossroads and must decide whether to phase out or increase its reliance on nuclear power as weapons and an energy source. Although a few countries, mostly European, have vowed to abolish nuclear power as an energy source, many other countries are about to increase their nuclear power programs. This book is written from a Japanese perspective and thus provides an alternative to views of Western writers. The author includes rigorous scientific analyses, however maintains a broad scope which allows the book to be accessible to decision-makers and non-specialists.

Abstract

The book analyses the risks of nuclear power stations. The security concept of reactors is explained. Measures against the spread of radioactivity after a severe accident, accidents of core melting and a possible crash of an air plane on a reactor containment are discussed. The book covers three scientific subjects of the safety concepts of Light Water Reactors: – A first part describes the basic safety design concepts of operating German Pressurized Water Reactors and Boiling Water Reactors including accident management measures introduced after the reactor accidents of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. These safety concepts are also compared with the experiences of the Fukushima accidents. In addition, the safety design concepts of the future modern European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) and of the future modern Boiling Water Reactor SWR-1000 (KERENA) are presented. These are based on new safety research results of the past decades. – In a second, part the possible crash of military or heavy commercial air planes on a reactor containment is analyzed. It is shown that reactor containments can be designed to resist to such an airplane crash. – In a third part, an online decision system is presented. It allows to analyze the distribution of radioactivity in the atmosphere and to the environment after a severe reactor accident. It provides data for decisions to be taken by authorities for the minimization of radiobiological effects to the population. This book appeals to readers who have an interest in save living conditions and some understanding for physics or engineering.

Abstract

This book provides comprehensive research findings related to the environmental monitoring of radiation, levels of radioactive nuclides in various environments, and dose estimation in residents after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident caused severe environmental contamination with radioactive nuclides. At the beginning of the book, a technical review written by a leading researcher of nuclear reactor technology explains what happened at the power plant. The review is followed by a commentary from a former member of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, providing the reader with easily understandable information about the concept of radiation dosage. In the main part of the book, a series of scientific reports presents valuable data on the radiation surveys of the environment, environmental radioactivity, transfer models and parameters of radioactive nuclides, and dose assessment among residents. These reports present a wide range of findings from the research carried out in a variety of activities by large governmental organizations as well as by small private groups and individuals. The reader thus will find a large collection of valuable and interesting data related to the environmental contamination by radioactive nuclides after the Fukushima accident. Although earlier reports on this issue have been made public, this book is the only publication to fully depict the actual situation by providing comprehensive data obtained by diverse organizations and individuals.
