Abstract

Approaching the material from a chemistry and engineering perspective, High Performance Polymers presents the most reliable and current data available about state-of-the-art polymerization, fabrication, and application methods of high performance industrial polymers. Chapters are arranged according to the chemical constitution of the individual classes, beginning with main chain carbon-carbon polymers and leading to ether-containing, sulfur-containing, and so on. Each chapter follows an easily readable template, provides a brief overview and history of the polymer, and continues on

Abstract

The agricultural sector is the main source of raw materials for biopolymers such as soy protein isolates (SPI), natural fibers, polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrates (PHBs), and many more. Over the years, the biopolymer sector has witnessed significant developments due to substantial investments that have been made in green technologies/processes. Apart from this, focus has also been given to improving the performance of the existing thermoplastic as well as thermoset polymers and synthetic fiber based composites. With the onset of green technology/process, agriculture has witnessed rapi

Abstract

Lianwei Li's Ph.D. thesis solves a long-standing problem in polymer physics: how does a hyperbranched chain pass through a cylindrical pore smaller than its size under an elongational flow field? The question was asked by the Nobel Laureate, the late Professor de Gennes in the 70s but has never been seriously addressed through real experiments. This thesis outlines how Lianwei Li developed a novel polymerization strategy using a seesaw-type macromonomer to prepare a set of "defect-free" hyperbranched chains with different overall molar masses and controllable uniform subchain lengths. The author then unearthed how the critical (minimum) flow rate at which a hyperbranched chain can pass through the pore, is dependent on the overall molar mass and the subchain length. The experimental results give a unified description of polymer chains with different topologies passing through a small cylindrical pore, which enables us to separate chains by their topologies instead of their sizes in ultrafiltration. In addition, this research also reveals how the chain structure of amphiphilic hyperbranched block and graft copolymers affect their solution properties, including the establishments of several classic scaling laws that relate the chain size and the intrinsic viscosity to the overall molar mass and the subchain length, respectively. This work has led to numerous publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Abstract

Shape-memory polymers (SMP) are a unique branch of the smart materials family which are capable of changing shape on-demand upon exposure to external stimulus. The discovery of SMP made a significant breakthrough in the developments of novel smart materials for a variety of engineering applications, superseded the traditional materials, and also influenced the current methods of product designing. This book provides the latest advanced information of on-going research domains of SMP. This will certainly enlighten the reader to the achievements and tremendous potentials of SMP. The basic fundam

Abstract

A new immobilization method for the localized adsorption of proteins on thermoplastic surfaces is introduced. Artificial three-phase interfaces were realized by surface structuring to control the wetting behavior which lead to a preferred adsorption in these modified areas. Additionally, different fabrication methods were analyzed to determine mass fabrication capabilities. These fabrication methods also allowed the production of fully structured microchannels to tune the fluids behavior within.

Abstract

Abstract

In this thesis, the author describes versatile and easy-to-use methods to control the properties of thermoresponsive polyacrylamides by developing novel synthetic methods for end-functionalized poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and block copolymers of poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAA). The synthesis of various urea end-functionalized PNIPAMs was achieved by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and the click reaction. The phase transition temperature of PNIPAM in water was controlled depending on the strength of the hydrogen bonding of the urea groups introduced at the chain end of the polymer. Novel living polymerization methods for N,N-dimethylacrylamide and N,N-diethylacrylamide were developed by group transfer polymerization (GTP) using a strong Brønsted acid as a precatalyst and an amino silyl enolate as an initiator. This process enabled the precise synthesis of PDEAA and its block copolymers—namely, thermoresponsive amphiphilic block copolymers and double-hydrophilic block copolymers.
