This doctoral thesis by Rikard Forsén focuses on alloying quaternary transition metal nitride hard coatings to enhance their properties such as hardness and oxidation resistance at high temperatures. The research particularly emphasizes Ti-Cr-Al-N coatings, exploring how the addition of a third metal to a ternary nitride system can improve thermal stability and hardness retention up to 1100 ºC. By using alloying and controlling coherency strain, the study demonstrates the ability to engineer improved hard nitride coatings for cutting tools used in high-speed and dry cutting applications. The work is intended for scientists and engineers in materials science, particularly those involved in developing advanced coatings for industrial applications.

The Nordic Council of Ministers, the BAT Group under the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production, has requested the consultant to prepare a report on Best Available Techniques (BAT) in wood preservation with chemicals in the Nordic countries. The Nordic wood preserving industry produces around 2.1 million m³ of impregnated wood per year, which is about one third of the total supply of pressure-treated wood in Europe. This report describes the present status of the used technologies, their emissions and impacts on the environment and technologies that can be considered BAT. The report will also be used as an input from the Nordic countries to the EU process under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) for preparation of the BAT Reference Document for preservation of wood and wood products with chemicals (WPC BREF) which is foreseen to start in 2014.

A smart coating is defined as one which changes its properties in response to an environmental stimulus. The Handbook of smart coatings for materials protection reviews the new generation of smart coatings for corrosion and other types of material protection.Part one explores the fundamentals of smart coatings for materials protection including types, materials, design and processing. Chapters review corrosion processes and strategies for prevention, smart coatings for corrosion protection, techniques for synthesising and applying smart coatings, multi-functional, self-healing coatings

One of the first thing that comes to your mind after hearing the term “corrosion” is corrosion of a metal. Corrosion is a basically harmful phenomenon, but it can be useful in some cases. For instance, environment’s pollution with corrosion products and damage to the performance of a system are among its harmful effects, whereas electric energy generation in a battery and cathodic protection of many structures are among its advantages. However, these advantages are almost nothing as compared to the costs and effects imposed by its detrimental influences. The enormous costs of this phenomenon can be better understand through studying the published statistics on direct and indirect corrosion damages on economy of governments. The direct cost of corrosion is near 3 % of the gross domestic product (GDP) of USA. Considering this huge cost, it is necessary to develop and expand the corrosion science and its protection technologies.

The effect of corrosion in the oil industry leads to the failure of parts. This failure results in shutting down the plant to clean the facility. The annual cost of corrosion to the oil and gas industry in the United States alone is estimated at 27 billion (According to NACE International)-leading some to estimate the global annual cost to the oil and gas industry as exceeding 60 billion. In addition, corrosion commonly causes serious environmental problems, such as spills and releases. An essential resource for all those who are involved in the corrosion management of oil and gas infrast

Independent Variables for Optical Surfacing Systems discusses the characterization and application of independent variables of optical surfacing systems, and introduces the basic principles of surfacing technologies and common surfacing systems. All the pivotal variables influencing surface quality are analyzed; evaluation methods for surface quality, the removal capability of tool influence functions, and a series of novel optical surfacing systems are introduced. The book also particularly focuses on the multi-path mode and dwell time used for deterministic surfacing. Researchers and graduate students working in optical engineering will benefit from this book; optical engineers in the industry will also find it a valuable reference work. Haobo Cheng is a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology.
