Abstract

A persistent problem when finding communities in large complex networks is the so-called resolution limit. This thesis addresses this issue meticulously, and introduces the important notion of resolution-limit-free. Remarkably, only few methods possess this desirable property, and this thesis puts forward one such method. Moreover, it discusses how to asses whether communities can occur by chance or not. One aspect that is often ignored in this field is treated here: links can also be negative, as in war or conflict. Besides how to incorporate this in community detection, it also examines the dynamics of such negative links, inspired by a sociological theory known as social balance. This has intriguing connections to the evolution of cooperation, suggesting that for cooperation to emerge, groups often split in two opposing factions. In addition to these theoretical contributions, the thesis also contains an empirical analysis of the effect of trading communities on international conflict, and how communities form in a citation network with positive and negative links.

Abstract

The book contains reproductions of the most important papers that gave birth to the first developments in nonlinear programming. Of particular interest is W. Karush's  often quoted Master Thesis, which is published for the first time. The anthology includes an extensive preliminary chapter, where the editors trace out the history of mathematical programming, with special reference to linear and nonlinear programming.

Abstract

M. M. Schiffer, the dominant figure in geometric function theory in the second half of the twentieth century, was a mathematician of exceptional breadth, whose work ranged over such areas as univalent functions, conformal mapping, Riemann surfaces, partial differential equations, potential theory, fluid dynamics, and the theory of relativity. He is best remembered for the powerful variational methods he developed and applied to extremal problems in a wide variety of scientific fields.   Spanning seven decades, the papers collected in these two volumes represent some of Schiffer's most enduring innovations. Expert commentaries provide valuable background and survey subsequent developments. Also included are a complete bibliography and several appreciations of Schiffer's influence by collaborators and other admirers.    .

Abstract

A highly readable introduction to stochastic integration and stochastic differential equations, this book combines developments of the basic theory with applications. It is written in a style suitable for the text of a graduate course in stochastic calculus, following a course in probability.   Using the modern approach, the stochastic integral is defined for predictable integrands and local martingales; then Itô’s change of variable formula is developed for continuous martingales. Applications include a characterization of Brownian motion, Hermite polynomials of martingales, the Feynman–Kac functional and the Schrödinger equation. For Brownian motion, the topics of local time, reflected Brownian motion, and time change are discussed.   New to the second edition are a discussion of the Cameron–Martin–Girsanov transformation and a final chapter which provides an introduction to stochastic differential equations, as well as many exercises for classroom use.   This book will be a valuable resource to all mathematicians, statisticians, economists, and engineers employing the modern tools of stochastic analysis.   The text also proves that stochastic integration has made an important impact on mathematical progress over the last decades and that stochastic calculus has become one of the most powerful tools in modern probability theory. —Journal of the American Statistical Association     An attractive text…written in [a] lean and precise style…eminently readable. Especially pleasant are the care and attention devoted to details… A very fine book. —Mathematical Reviews  .

Abstract

This book opens new avenues in understanding mathematical models within the context of a  transition economy. The exposition lays out the methods for combining different mathematical structures and tools to effectively build the next model that will accurately reflect real world economic processes. Mathematical modeling of weather phenomena allows us to forecast certain essential weather parameters without any possibility of changing them. By contrast, modeling of transition economies gives us the freedom to not only predict changes in important indexes of all types of economies, but also to influence them more effectively in the desired direction. Simply put: any economy, including a transitional one, can be controlled. This book is useful to anyone who wants to increase profits within their business, or improve the quality of their family life and the economic area they live in. It is beneficial for undergraduate and graduate students specializing in the fields of Economic Informatics, Economic Cybernetics, Applied Mathematics and Large Information Systems, as well as for professional economists, and employees of state planning and statistical organizations.

Abstract

This work is devoted to the late Ukrainian computer scientist V. M. Glushkov  on the 90th anniversary of his birthday. Dr. Glushkov is known for his contribution to the world computer science and technology, and this volume analyzes the ideas and paths of development of informatics formulated by him, and demonstrates their important role in constructing computer technologies of basic research in the fields of applied mathematics, theories of computer programming, and computing systems.   A significant portion of the monograph is devoted to the elucidation of new results obtained  in the field of mathematical modeling of complicated processes, creation of new methods for solving and investigating optimization problems in different statements, and development of computer technologies for investigations in the field of economy, biology, medicine, and information security in systems.   The monograph will be of particular interest to informatics specialists and experts using methods of informatics and computer technologies to investigate complicated processes of different natures and developing new information technologies. It may also be useful for both graduate students and postgraduates specializing in Computer Science.
